Without the highlights...although highlights slightly lighter than your own hair does wonders, and does look quite natural - if done correctly!

My advise: Never get plastic surgery unless you've been disfigured in an attack or an accident, and you might want to try a little longer on top with a fade or a male-modelesque shag look on the sides. You could pull off that indie college artboy look, I think.

Get rid of the Prince Valiant look. It doesn't suit you. Get it styled short and conservative and then let it grow out a little longer. That way when you need to go to court you can just blow dry it a bit. But, when you're just hanging out and being casual you can use some gel or mousse to spike it up a little or something.

I agree...I think you should keep the sides short and grow out the top a little longer.

Okay, thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments! I'm going to respond to a few of them.

1) The consensus seems to be that I should get rid of the bangs, at least in their current "fringe" form. I'll agree. If nothing else, they tend to get out of control once they get too long. (And I have a bad habit of putting off haircuts.)

2) As for shaving my head, I think I'll pass. They say that your maternal grandfather is your best indicator of whether you'll suffer from male pattern baldness... well, he was pretty bald. So I'll likely wind up that way a few decades down the road.

Aside from that, I did have a very short buzz cut (think military boot camp) when I was about 12 years old, and I don't think it was very flattering on me. I doubt that shaving my head would look any better.

3) Aerogram: Nope, no mustache for me. I think that's just a "five o' clock shadow."

4) AprilMichelle: I've actually got more hair to work with than the photo suggests. It was taken back in November, and from the looks of it, I had just gotten my hair cut. My hair tends to grow fast, and it's naturally thick (they sometimes thin it out when I get it cut). Maybe I'll take a photo tonight to show what I've got at the moment.

5) Lleena: As for that gentleman's haircut (sorry, I can't read his autograph)--I've actually had my hair cut like that before, minus the "point" in front. Well, it was never quite that short, but it was close. I wish I still had my Massachusetts driver's license, because it showed me with a cut like that.

The problem is that if I get my hair cut short like that. my wife says that I look like a Q-Tip. (And she doesn't mean the rapper.) Granted, that's just her opinion, but it's a consideration.

6) LaVisHh: Thanks for your professional advice. smile I'm going to have to print that one out as a possibility. How much maintenance does that cut require, both in terms of daily styling and trims?

7) tommyalma: Can you point me to photos of a "male-modelesque shag" or the "indie college artboy look"? I'm intrigued. Thanks!

With all that said, I have an appointment for next Tuesday evening at my old salon in the city where I used to live. Both of the stylists who worked on my hair have since left (it's been at least five years), but I asked if they had anyone with special expertise in men's hair, and so they booked me with "Josh." The appointment does include a professional consultation, and I'm going to discuss with Josh the comments and suggestions made here.

Again, thanks everyone for your candid opinions. I'll entertain additional thoughts if anyone has them.

You're welcome, matt.

Any short cut needs to be redone every 3-4 weeks. The reason for this is that the places around the ears tend to touch the ears and bend in different directions - that's the first indication of needing it redone. I would also find a hairstylist handy with both an electric trimmer and a razor, so that she can razor-cut the top to give it texture. The back of the head should be tapered down the back until the hair is gone...no bottom "shelf"...hope this makes sense...faded down is better than cut straight across at the bottom of the neck.

Regarding daily styling. All you need is a medium-hold gel (place like the size of a dime, spread over your palms), run your hand straight back through your hair once, and comb the sides back into place! If you need to dry it, do it at this point.

It's a simple, professional haircut, that can be made to look funky and fun by messing up the top when you go somewhere out of the office.

Thanks once again! Just to clarify, how should the daily styling of the top differ between "office days" and "out-of-the office days" (e.g., going clubbing)?

For the office, I'd just comb it straight back, and slightly mess the front top hairline...it's a very nice look...just make sure the stylist cuts your hair no longer than 1 1/2 inches long in the front area. It is vital that a razor be used, or someone with excellent ability to texturize with shears...the point here is to NOT cut the top all even, but jagged.

For going out, just use your fingers, mess it as much as you want. It will look just great, matt!

It really all depends on the individual haircut, and type of hair...some can get away with 3-4 weeks, but low-cut fades every week if you wanna look sharp.

I dont use a brush or comb at all. Just a bit of gel and rub it through. You're done in about 30 seconds. biggrin

Okay, so I like this look. But I showed it to my wife, and she had a different opinion. sad

She basically said:

1) This cut would over-emphasize my high hairline and tall forehead.

2) She likes my "Jim Carrey Dumb & Dumber fringe" bangs because they lower my hairline.

Does this change your professional opinion any?

BTW, she is not a professional hair stylist, and it's my hair--not hers. smile

(sigh) I'm not sure if I'm ready to be a sex symbol... smile

Seriously... thanks for the feedback. If I try this cut and it works out well, I might try some highlights, but probably not as extreme as the gentleman in the picture... that might be a bit much for the courtroom (at least in the eyes of some judges).

Any thoughts on Kim's comments about my hairline being too high for this cut? She might have a point... I just don't know. shrug

Only that if your hairline looks higher a week from now after no haircut, you should definitely shave it all off.
