Green Lantern...thoughts? *spoilers* Has anyone made it to see Green Lantern yet?
I just saw it, and just like a lot of the critics, I was fairly disappointed with it. It really lacked any emotion, and it damn near took an hour for things to get cooking. Plus, you mean to tell me Jordan had the answer on how to defeat Parallax, and the elders didn't? They had to be coaxed into use their own source of power to defeat the enemy?? Dr. Hammond as a baddie absolutely sucked, too. And, it didn't seem to take Hal too long to master creating imaginative constructs. He was damn near a pro almost out of the gate.
The only positives I saw in this movie were Parallax had a cool look, Sinestro, and the CGI for the constructs. Actually, almost all of the CGI was pretty nice, but it just emphasized that this was way more sizzle than steak.
I'm sure there'll be a sequel (since Sinestro STILL has that unused yellow ring), but they're going to have to come more correct than this! Esp, with decent stuff like X-Men: FC, Thor, and next year's Batman movie that's being released. People's expectation for these superhero movies are going to demand a lot better than just a plain ol' CGI-fest.

I had similar feelings. I thought Ryan Reynolds was pretty good as the lead role (not that I am a Green Lantern aficionado at all). And I appreciate character development as much as the next person, but it felt like almost too much time was used establishing that Hal is afraid of sh*t. His dad dying, commitment, etc. And I hate to be the guy that is all "More explosions, less talk!" but that's almost how I felt. It's a comic book movie. Using 1.5 hours to introduce us to the character and his circumstances and having one 5 minute final fight scene left me unsatisfied. There wasn't enough action.
And I agree. Him destroying Parallax with relative ease while all these Guardians just sat around with their thumbs up their asses?? Not really buying it.
That said, I think a sequel was clearly set-up and I have more hope for it with most of the back story taken care of.

It seems like the movie was one long setup for a sequel, to be honest. We all know Sinestro's the inevitable real villain, but even so, they're gonna have to do better than this. They better hope a sequel even gets made, what with the disappointing box office numbers from opening weekend. Plus, what was the point in even having a "mask"? ANYONE can tell who it is if they already know Hal, so why front? Lol! It ain't that same thing of, "Clark Kent has glasses, and Superman does not. That should clearly distinguish the two when fooling the public."
I read the film cost about $200 million, and it brought in about $52 or $53 million for the opening weekend, domestically. I'm sure WB is not too thrilled with that and is hoping the international box office can help 'em break even. There's no doubt it eventually will make a profit (especially with it being a long summer and DVD sales), but they gotta know that early not too kind word-of-mouth and critics lambasting it is what kept some people away. You just know they were hoping for another Iron Man on their hands. Same premise, I guess. B-class superhero's first time on the big screen. That's what they get for coasting!

i saw it and it was alright but then again this is DC were talking about. hmm that whole city scene of the fight was meh cause even the extras had me saying out loud WHAT THE HELL ARE Y'ALL DOING?!!"
as 4 synestro, if u stayed just a little bit after the beginning end credits u see where the next film is going 2 go which is good cause in the begining of the film where the narrator describes the lanterns and mentions the Core, there are other factions of the Core besides the green lanterns.
surprised me that michael clark duncan voices the brute lantern ..imagine King Pin and Deadpoll doing a DC movie heheheh man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I appreciate that they actually sort of mocked the concept in the balcony scene.
Almost sounded like they were mocking Christian Bale's over the top Batman voice too for a second. [Edited 6/23/11 22:08pm]

The best explanation for whats happening with comic book movies lately (and I paraphrase here) goes something like this...
I don't read Marvel books but their movies are still making me care about the characters they're portraying. I do read DC books, but their movies are making me want to stop.
Back to me now - I don't read either of them. I'm a super hero hater. I'm an independent, small publisher guy and I always will be. That being said, I totally agree with the above statement. And I've heard enough bad about Green Lantern that I know I won't be checking it out until I can do so for free.

so are u more of the type that likes movies like the watchmen or the priest? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I loved the Watchmen comic book (I have the original 12 issues, the paperback and the Absolute versions in my collection), but I only liked the movie. I think they did a pretty fine job with it, but its still not perfect, its too slow and I'll never be able to fully accept the things they changed (unlike, say, the LOTR trilogy where I actually LIKE some of what they changed).
Are you talking about Priest, from this year, or an earlier film called The Priest? If its the newer one I haven't seen it yet. I should though, because I dig Paul Bettany.
My movie tastes in general do not reflect my comic book (most of my favorites will never likely make it to the screen, although a couple of them are getting closer) or book reading habits, though. If a movie looks good on any number of levels (actor or actress, director, cinematographer, art/set design, writer, story concept, adaptation, etc.), I'll go see it. And I pretty much ignore critics, too. But word of mouth from friends and family is big for me, and nearly all of them have had nothing good to say about this one (Green Lantern).

yes i am referring 2 this years preist. sometimes i don't realize until i'm in the movies that it might be a comic book movie. origin story movies can be hard 2 bring forth to the screen and if it drags then it's really a problem. watchmen was a hot movie 4 me tho. i think hollyweird is going now in the veins of "rewritten history" or changing what may have been prolonging the topics of conspiracy. watchmen features the comedian was the one 2 shoot JFK. and now upcoming in the transformers is a consiparcy on why man shot 2 the moon.
if word of mouth has a lot of value to u, then i would say wait until ur ready 2 form ur own decision of green lantern, it's not perfect but it's not all that bad imo man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
