Oil pulling or oil swishing, in alternative medicine, is a traditional Indian folk remedy that involves swishing oil in the mouth for claimed oral and systemic health benefits. It is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita where it is called Kavala Gandoosha / Kavala Graha. It is also used to reduce enamel wear from stomach acid from vomiting

The practitioner rinses the mouth with approximately one tablespoon of oil (sesame and sunflower oils are the most recommended) for 15–20 minutes on an empty stomach (before eating/drinking) then spits it out.

This process makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva. As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. The oil is put in the mouth, with chin tilted up, and slowly swished, sucked, chomped and pulled through the teeth. The oil changes from yellow and oily consistency to a thick viscous consistency. A second round of oil pulling may be done with fresh oil for further cleansing. The oral cavity is then thoroughly rinsed and washed with normal tap water and fingers or tooth brush. This procedure is typically performed daily

i never heard of it until now... and i prob wont ever try it....

How, exactly, would swishing vegetable oil around in one's mouth "cure almost everything?" confuse

Or sesame oil, for that matter. lol And what would your breath smell like if you swished sesame oil everyday for 15 minutes? Even if you rinse and brush after I have to imagine you would start to smell like the stuff.

And couldn't we just eat a salad with some decent dressing instead?

Well, but you know...this is an ancient practice, so it must be...like...oh, so mysterious and awesome and shit.

Nowadays, we have something called a toothbrush that takes care of what this did in a lot less time. lol

Nope - never tried it and I don't know anyone who has.

Sorry.

On a side note - I have a friend who swears by balsamic vinegar when she has acid indigestion - one tablespoon and it makes her all better. Who knew.

Oh I'm not saying it cures cancer. In fact, it probably does not but it's not impossible that it could work. In fact, I don't know much about it at all WHICH IS WHY I WAS ASKING, but I wouldn't write it off immediately. Who knows? Remember, according to the laws of aerodynamics, bumble bees should not be able to fly. wink

Well if you look at the rules of osmosis, thicker viscosity is going to pull in more fluid to level itself out. Assuming that the toxins are in the fluid that is being sucked (osmosis-like) into the oil, then perhaps swishing with oil can pull out toxins from your mouth only. And your mouth being the dirtiest part of the body, then maybe I can see it working. But what if the toxins aren't in the fluid that is being sucked into the oil? Then you're still left with them in your mouth and you are just spitting out oil that has been thinned out by your saliva.
