Comedian George Lopez’s nights are numbered.
Cable channel TBS said Wednesday it was cancelling Mr. Lopez’s late-night talk show after just two seasons. The program, which airs right after Conan O’Brien’s show on the Time Warner Inc.-owned network, has seen its audience dwindle this season. An average of 546,000 viewers tuned into “Lopez Tonight” each night this year, compared with 1.14 million people who watched Conan, according to Nielsen Co.
Viewership of Lopez Tonight fell considerably during its second season—by about 40%–compared to its first season, even though the program had a higher-profile lead-in show.
Last year, Mr. Lopez agreed to move his show from 11PM to the midnight time slot to accommodate Mr. O’Brien, who was starting a new late-night show on the cable network.
TBS made the announcement about cancelling Mr. Lopez’s show just days before his final episode, which will air Thursday night. Some television executives called the announcement sudden, but people close to TBS said that the network has been weighing the decision for some time because, in addition to declining viewership, the show costs too much to produce and has lost money for the network.

The time slot change probably had a lot to do with it. Not everybody wants to stay up till midnight for an hour long show. Such a shame. I loved the musical guests.

I'm actually seeing George Lopez next month.He's touring with Santana.He'll come out and do his comedy thing,then Carlos and band will take over.

Very sad news. Maybe he should have taken the earlier time slot.No more urban talk shows left now. Now waiting for Aresnio to come back...  will ALWAYS think of  like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. |

I went to a taping in Janurary and it was so fun. and of course Prince was there in april. AND one day I walked by Lopez himself when I was going for a walk..so this show is special to me. lol.

I agree. I had a feeling when the time slot changed from 11pm to midnight it would lose viewership. I used to actually catch it at 11pm, but when it changed to 12 am, was just too late to stay up to watch it. It is a shame because he did have some nice musical guests. [Edited 8/11/11 9:02am] | |

He does a very good stand up. I remember seeing him a long time ago, during a tribute to him after his sitcom cancelled & after his transplant. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! I like George..He didnt lose the show cuz he's "Brown". George's show and Conan's show are not pulling in the numbers The Power that Be wanna see. Conan will survive another Season but if he doesnt turn his show into "Gold" the same thing will be happening to him around this time in 2012.
George has no problem getting movie roles and his stand-up shows sell-out. Another door will open for him... | |

How the %$$#%$# does that twit Jimmy Fallon have a show and George can't have one? Primetime network TV is the most racist thing on the planet. Of course they're going to put the Mexican guy on the short end of the stick so that Conan gets his way. How ridiculous, the other way around would have never happened....

I'd rather not respond to the racism bit, but I have watched George's show and it's irritating. His stand-up was too long and uninteresting and his interviews were pretty bland. I didn't understand how he got a show in the first place. time flies. |
