The thing about when WWE bought WCW, they didn't get the "big names" the invasion involved a 2 of 3 big names (DDP, Booker T) and then the midcarders

Sting, Nash, Mysterio, Goldberg, and the others had contracts with Time Warner so the WCW invasion wasn't complete

Something that would've been interesting would've been if WCW and ECW invaded and in the midst of the battle, WWE, WCW, and ECW wrestlers all joined forces against the bosses

Well, when they bought WCW, they (WWE) then had the right to buy the contracts of whoever they chose. Those Time Warner contracts could've been "broken" if the wrestlers themselves wanted them too, but like you said, a lot of the big names decided to accept the buy out and not go directly into WWE (on top of WWE not wanting to spend that kind of guaranteed money on them). And that lack of star power DEFINITELY hurt their chances of being their "own" show.

Have you peeped the Nitro DVD yet, bboy?

Exactly, and to make it worse, they had Stone Cold join WCW and have Shane heading them

That whole thing along with WWE's Rise And Fall of WCW and Monday Night Wars DVD IMO devalued the contributions that WCW and ECW made to the industry. Those 2 DVDs were, while in parts were interesting, in the end were just Vince jerking off his ego. One of the Briscos saying at the end "Ted, we beat your butt hehe" Vince's money is all in WWE. Ted Turner has CHANNELS lol

anyway, no I haven't watched it yet. I heard it's really good though. I don't really need a documentary segment, I just want the matches lol

it's a stretch of an idea but back when the invasion happend, there was still velocity and some other show, vince could have drafted all the WWF talent and put them on raw and velocity and alloed smackdown to become wcw/ecw talent imo

Yeah, that was when the roster was easily able to sustain a real brand extension. Chock full of real talent!

I know that when they initially purchased WCW, they were going to do just this. They were gonna turn Smackdown into WCW. But Booker T and Buff Bagwell had a God awful match on Raw, and they made the decision that the performers weren't ready to carry a show by themselves and shelved that idea. They weren't wrestling in the "WWF style", as they say. Here's the match:

Have you gotten a chance to check out that new Best Of Nitro DVD yet?? I downloaded it, and I'm just starting the second disc.

god i remember thatmatch that was just awful!! i don't know what was worst tho, that match with booker t. or the one with hhh vs steiner ..smh

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Well, I will say that the ECW DVD was really more about ECW than what the WWE did to them or any gloating. The only thing that I saw was when they were talking about the Triple H vs Taz match (champ vs champ) and how they easily and CLEANLY put HHH over Taz. Vince acknowledged that was a mistake that he wished he could take back. But um, of course, that was years after the fact. That was his way of saying, at the time, that his wrestlers were 100% better than ECW's.

But the DVD on the whole were all about what ECW did really well and/or the tough breaks that contributed to their demise. Now, the WCW one definitely had some gloating on it. lol But the Nitro one isn't bad at all, as it's almost all matches, with DDP coming in now and then to add his 2 cents. I'll probably download their "best cage matches" DVD soon, too. wink

I gotta see the ECW one. I remember when they started showing it in Virginia (where I grew up) back in '96 and I was 9. Me, my brothers, and my brothers friends were the only ones who knew about it and we LOVED it

Yeah, the ECW one is VERY nice. It's like 2.5 hours, all documentary, great clips, and some real GENUINE feelings, esp from Heyman. No posturing for the cameras here; he just does not like Eric Bischoff. Lol!

nod lol

But to give Eric credit, he and some others declined to be in the documentary because they knew it was going to be filled with revisionist history.

And I just find it hilarious that Vince thinks he was beefing with Ted Turner. No bruh, you were beefing with Eric Bischoff. Ted was too busy counting his millions and laying up with Jane Fonda lol

IIRC, Bischoff was indeed in the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD, giving his take on a couple of the signings he had from ECW at the time and an accusation or two of Heyman's. I'm really gonna have to watch this one again.

Also, I read there's going to be a Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels DVD coming out in October where the two are being interviewed together about their careers and history together by Jim Ross. Sounds pretty interesting. The interview was just filmed about 2 weeks ago. JR has talked about it on Twitter.

When did the ECW dvd come out? He may have still been with WWE when it was released

I heard about the HBK/Hitman DVD. It was said to be pretty emotional if I remember correctly from the article I read

Oh, Bischoff was still very much with the company when the ECW DVD came out. It was released sometime in 2004.

I just can't believe how much "healing" and good will (or at least cordial will) there is now between HBK and Hart. I mean, for SO many years Bret was just ready to knock the holy hell outta HBK at the very thought of him, but ever since they shared the ring in January 2010, Bret's mellowed out. Trust me, I'm really glad he did, but I just never thought it would come until after someone was dead!! Really glad it didn't. They're two of the greatest ring technicians to EVER be in the game.

Did you see this one? I only cared about one match, and that was RVD vs. Lynn, and they really seemed to be caught off guard a little bit by the hexagon ring. Things didn't flow as well as a RVD/Lynn match usually does, though that could be chalked up to age and ring rust. They had a couple of nice spots, though. I just think the ending came a little too soon and easy for RVD.

I think Bret still resents HBK whereas Shawn has moved past it. After reading parts of Bret's book and looking at some of his interviews, he strikes me as someone who holds grudges. A bit of jerk IMO

CM Punk is the MAN!!!!!!

That opening promo was hot as shit! He acknowledged that bullshit-looking belt, the "Cena's fired angle" last year with Nexus, how he finally made WWE socially relevant, etc...

I love this shit! But, this pretty much confirms what I've been saying all along....I think he's already re-signed.

Bret's & Shawn's respected autobiographies were written before they finally decide to end their personal beef. These days, THE only person Bret doesn't like is Ric Flair.

I was going to say the same thing! HBK and Hart only reconciled their differences in January of last year. Hart's autobiography was released a year and a half before then in 2008.

I honestly do think Bret has moved past everything. Finally. nod

Punk is awesome.

That promo looked to be falling flat a couple of times (when he was off the mic) and he just swooped back in and saved it.

It made no sense though. How many times have we seen "Mr. McMahon" in a feud/situation with the top stars in his company, going through hell to destroy them and get his way? Yet he comes out tonight with the whole "Im Vince McMahon" cocky ass shit before completely caving in to Punk...who he supposedly doesnt think has "star quality".

And Cena is just... disbelief

CM Junk's rant was cool last week because it came from left field but that

shit ain't gonna fly long. Quit talking shit and get your ass in the ring and quit

hiding behind your stooges which is currently Nexus(i refuse to discuss the straight

edge society clowns) and prove you are a champion.

Yeah, but I appreciate the "build". I do get what you're saying. It was cool when it first happened, it's getting lame now, especially with Super Cena being in on the promos

This, I wholeheartedly agree with. He's calling him a "punk" and whatnot even right before Punk comes to the ring, but he's so willing to not only sign, but sign an AMENDED contract with stupid new CEO-type clauses (a new jet for himself, his image on everything, etc..). Any other time, he'd say don't do what Bret did at Survivor Series and screw himself

Still, I really liked a few of the things Punk said throughout the whole thing. But after this whole epic storyline, what is Punk's character? And I'm sorry, I don't buy he's leaving after the PPV. He's already re-signed, and he may be gone for a brief period of time, but once he returns, what's his character going to be? Mr. Don't Give Him A Live Mic Because He May Say Something Outlandish? I'm just curious as to how they're going to parlay this/him into a long-term cash cow.

well i guess i'm a muthafucka then cause i'm a yankee fan and a yankee beat 2 boston red fucks in the home run derby last night!! lol

but i was also watching raw last night and the minute cena's music hit during that contract signing i wished right then and there someone would beat the shit out of him!! tired of cena's back and forth rants about caring about the fans then goes back 2 his PC speeches. when cena first hit the scene and had a match with kurt angle, i felt he had some good wrestling skills then came the THUG mentality gimmick and he hasn't been the same. so what CM punk was saying last night, oops i mean PHIL lol, was still true because he has WRESTLING skills not cena.

and on a side note, something we have discussed a few pages back, did they not make TRUTH the most stupid person on the planet when he discussed his phobia? damn either african american talent is protayed as either beasts or the dumbest fuckers on the earth. SMH

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Montreal Screwjob in a nutshell

Bret Hart won the WWF title from the Undertaker at Summerslam 97. Soon after Vince realized he could not afford to pay Bret the outlandish 20 year contract he had recently signed (this was prior to the Attitude Era...WWF was struggling). Vince allowed Bret to talk to other organizations (WCW) if he wanted to leave. Bret makes a deal with WCW and is on his way out...but he's still WWF champ.

Vince tells Bret to drop the title to Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 97 in Montreal. Bret refuses due to legit heat between him and Michaels. Claiming his contract gave him "creative control" over his character for his last 30 days in the company, Bret agreed to drop the title to the Undertaker, Steve Austin...ANYONE but HBK. Vince reluctantly agrees and the plan was for Bret to beat Michaels in Montreal by DQ, then drop the title on RAW the next night.

During the match, HBK puts Bret in the sharpshooter. Bret was supposed to reverse it leading to HHH's interference and the planned DQ. Instead, as soon as Shawn puts Bret in the sharpshooter, Vince (at ringside) signals the ref to stop the match. Ref calls for the bell and Shawn Michaels "wins" the WWF title by "submission". It was painfully obvious to anyone watching that something was wrong...Bret lost his mind and spit a MASSIVE loogey straight in Vince's face before destroying everything in sight...announce tables, monitors, etc. Shawn Michaels acted as if he had no idea what was going to go down and had to be told by Vince to take the belt and go...he did, and acted so pissed about it.

Anyhoo...Vince got major heat for it. It could have been disastrous for the WWF, but it actually saved their company. Vince used the legit heat being thrown at him and created "Mr. McMahon", the evil CEO we all know and love. The rest is history.

I still remembered the episode. Shawn didn't look too pleased to just "walk away" with the title. He looked as upset as Bret over what Vince had done. Seeing Bret do that was real sad. That definitely wasn't scripted. That was how he felt. That's why he went nuts the way he did.
