Tracy Morgan, tsk tsk. Nashville — A man who was in the audience at a recent Tracy Morgan show in Nashville said that the well-known comedian and "30 Rock" actor went beserk when talking about how he'd treat a gay son: 'I'd kill him.'
Audience member Kevin Rogers, who is gay, wrote about the June 3 show on Facebook:

lawd, so tacky.
It always astounded me how people could laugh at Eddie Murphy's Gay/Aids jokes, and they definitely had the potential to color people's perceptions of homosexuals. The Morgan's comments go from ghetto to fag-bashing in about the time it takes to flip a switch.
gross.

Isn't Mr. Morgan a comedian? Than all nothing is off limits; I've seen Tracy live as well, he's an equal opportunity offender. You don't think it's funny than its not.
Years ago I was watching Live At The Apollo, and they had a comdedian that came out talkin' about black people living in the projects. He was brutal and some sistas in the front row took exception and started arguing with the guy; they were soooo pissed security has to escort them out.
HA HA... it wasn't funny to them, oh well.

Yeah, I've never disliked him but never was that crazy abou thim either. Just somewhere in the middle with a few high notes I guess. I've enjoyed him on 30Rock but not because of any brilliant acting. I kind of thing the joke is on him in a way, like he's been cast to play a (slightly) exaggerated version of himself (dumbass).
But while the "joke" comes off harsh/non-funny I'm actually very much on the fence on this due to I don't think anything should be off limits in comedy (or anything creative, for that matter). I think you take chances and sometimes you fail miserably, but that comes with the territory. I love comedians like Lisa Lampinelli and she jokes about every racial/gender/sexual stereotype and other shit that is deemed "inproper" and rubs a lot of folk the wrong way.
I did a painting called "Supermodel" of Aunt Jemima wearing an LV rag on her head. Most people get the tongue in cheek-ness of it and I've actually re-painted it on commission many times over the years. Out of all those who have bought it all were black women with the exception of a gay dude and maybe 2 white ladies. But that's not to say it's for everyone or acceptable to everyone. I got nearly cussed out walking back to my car from a Grenwich Village market by a young black lady who insisted that all the black women who ever bought it were just ignorant. Cest La Vie.

I don't see what his problem is. There is a thin line between funny and offensive, he definitely crossed the line and was damn offensive.
He has come out and apologized for it, so fair play to him.

It's a very thin line. This is why I say that sometimes you go for something and just FAIL. And to me, in this case it does fall on offensive. But offensive is also one of those beholder things, which is what puts me on the fence on these type things.
To me what pushes it to not-funny/offensive is the violence in the joke. Like Murphy's AIDS jokes had the potential to cause harm due to the fact that so much was still unknown and peoples opinions were at the time being shaped on the subject. With this one, we're still fighting homophobia and gaybashings, so to put a violent twist just falls flat and not funny to me.

I love Tracy Morgan. Practically every word that comes out of his mouth makes me laugh. I'm not too bothered by this.

Sigh...two weeks ago at Book Expo, I walked right past Tyra Banks and didn't even notice. A friend--a straight girl!--had to point her out. But I did notice Flava Flav.
Maybe I've been living a lie all this time.

yeah I don't quite understand where people pick & choose which parts they think a comedian says during a comedy act are meant to be serious
Bernie Mack talked about hitting his kid in the head until the white meat came out. I doubt anyone took him seriously [Edited 6/10/11 10:03am] My Legacy

Exactly. Or "And now for the non-comedic, portion of my show, folks..."
I think for the most part comedians intend and expect that what they say will be percieved as trying to inject humor into a situation. And yes they fail. This was said on stage during a routine, again, not during a heart to heart on Wawa Walter's 10 Most Fascinating People.

as for the topic
the guy who first reported this said Morgan said: "He said if his son that was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice] or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N (one word I refuse to use) to death."

I remember seeing him on Def Comedy Jam as a relative unknown yeeeaaaarrrrs ago, and he laid into this really offensive bit on Puerto Ricans - including yelling at Latina-looking women in the front row, "yeah, that's right, MAMI, I'm talkin about CHU!" But he was yelling at them in a really aggressive way and not at all like he was letting them in on the joke.
They booed the shit out of him.

I read that shit.
They could have at least tried to make it sound like Tracy wrote it, lol.
"While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context," added Morgan.
I DARE his drunk ass to read that shit out loud.
