I do love chicago, but I do not plan on living here after September when my lease is up so give me some good places to think about moving to peeps...preferably not in the midwest, unless it is the Detroit area or Minne area.

I'm biased, because I was born there... but check out Boston, although be aware that it's an expensive place to live. Have at least $4,000 handy if you're going to rent an apartment there--you'll likely have to pay four times the monthly rent at lease signing (first month, last month, security deposit, and broker's fee). I would also advise not having a car if you're living in the city itself. The "T" (subway) is much more convenient for getting around.

I know you're interested in moving outside the Midwest, but I do think Indianapolis is worth a look. It seems to be one of the most "liveable" large cities in the country... I believe the cost of living is below the national average, and you've got plenty of lifestyle options... everything from a downtown loft apartment by Conseco Fieldhouse (home of the Pacers) to a suburban-style gated community. There's also the benefit of living in a city that's experiencing a "renaissance" of sorts.

One major downside of Indy is that it's got plenty of urban sprawl. A car is almost a necessity here--nobody rides the local bus system unless they have no other choice. A rail public transportation system might be built in the future, but nothing is definite, aside from a limited monorail system that's being built to link up some of the downtown hospitals. (On the flip side, it's easy to have a car in Indy--we're able to keep three of them at our downtown apartment. Parking is cheap, and if you've lived in Chicago, you won't have any problems with the traffic here.)

As for Detroit and Minneapolis... I'd definitely consider living in Minneapolis, even if Paisley Park weren't there. Detroit I don't know about, though... the suburbs seem to be thriving, but I'm not too crazy about the city itself (although I understand it's been improving). I think I'd rather live on the other side of the river in Windsor, Ontario... assuming that I could get over the immigration hurdles associated with moving to Canada.

Moving back outside the Midwest... from what little I've seen of Atlanta, I'd definitely consider it. I'd like to visit there again if I ever get the chance. I recently reconnected with an old friend who moved to the Atlanta area from Philadelphia, and I think she's very happy with it.

Vancouver Canada was rated the most beautiful city in the world and I have to agree. It's really nice there, unfortunatly it rains waaay to much in the winter months, it gets kind of gloomy and depressing after the first 3 months of non-stop rain.

Well, I represent the "southern" United States, and, though I don't much like Kentucky in particular, I can see that I will probably live in the southern US the rest of my life by choice.

Besides the fact there is a lot of beautiful nature shit, it's cheaper down here.

The Big Island of Hawaii:

  • Rainforests
  • White, Black, and Green sand beaches
  • Snow high on the mountain top
  • 70-80 degrees F weather
  • Kilauea volcano...active daily
  • Friendly people
  • Family oriented
  • Small classroom sizes
  • The sunset and sunrise
  • Many places where you can escape people, and listen to only the sounds of nature
  • The night sky is unaffected by city lights, as there are only a few
  • The striking contrast of green, black, blue, and white
  • Tropical flowers
  • Tropical fruit
  • The clean air
  • Humpback's that you can watch from the shoreline
  • The warmth and clarity of the Pacific Ocean

So why am I not there? Too expensive, economy sucks, and too much family. lol

Boston is a nice place to live with the exception of the snow...I HATE the snow. There's a lot of history here and you're just an hour away from Cape Cod. And if you do like the snow, plenty of skiing. You're close to NYC too.

I've never been to California but earthquakes scare the shit out of me so I would never live there. We get a mild hurricane every once in a while...that's the extent of the crazy weather.

An hour? Well, you're certainly not driving to the Cape on Friday evening or leaving the Cape on Sunday afternoon. smile I once made the mistake of driving to the Cape during the Friday rush hour... I think my left (clutch) foot and leg were pretty much numb by the time I got there. smile

Anyway, as for Boston, yes, the winter weather is a problem. I'd say the other downsides are: 1) the high cost of living; 2) bad drivers and congested roads; 3) the people tend to be relatively unfriendly; and 4) Bostonians can be quite provincial. But if you can deal with those things, I think it's a pretty cool place.

baltimore, md is a good place.

it's a big city with a small town feel.

you're close to philly, dc and the airport(if you have to make a quick getaway).

there are tons of things to do from shopping to the inner harbor to sports (go ravens! :wOOt: )

the cost of living isn't bad, either.

( now i miss living there sad )

My family just had a lot of relatives staying with us over Christmas time, and they were really sorry to go back to the UK. It IS more multicultural than Britain, it is widely noted that after the USA, we are the most culturally diverse nation per capita. As for egaliterian, we don't have the ghettos or nearly as much crime. My relatives were saying that the crime in parts of urbanised Britain can get pretty awful and the place is filthy compared to Australia. Not to mention England's crappy weather, they said. They have plans to come back as soon as they can.

I will say though, that I love the country areas of England - Cornwall, etc...they can't be beat for that type of thing. And I was born in Scotland and lived the first few years of my live in England. So I have fond memories...but the UK of then is quite different to the UK of now apparently.
