When June19 asked me privately in the chatroom whether I thought a chatter called Peace was Prince, for some reason I said yes.

I thought it would be a joke but it clearly wasn't that funny because only I knew. I started to feel guilty when she started to PM and orgnote me, wanting to know more about Prince and how cool it was. The more I said I couldn't talk about it, the more I appeared as if I was hiding THE BIG SECRET.

Sorry June19. pray

I think you have one more secret... does "hobbits" ring a bell? Would you care to share?

Where did you appear from, you little hobbit?! hug

That is NOT my secret. Raspberry told EVERYONE in the chat yesterday. Am I getting defensive? Damn, this confession!

Please visit the following chatroom http://www.councilofelrond.com/ if you'd like to get your elvish fucking freak on. I hear they are into dialects to. By the way, you seriously do not want to know about their initiation, ma precious!

Okay, it's been a running joke for about five years, so I guess it's time to come clean...

I am responsible for the "Hey Hannigan" hoax.

"Hey Hannigan" is (obviously) not a Prince outtake. I don't know who created it. But I know who "performed" the vocals: John Grubor, a disbarred lawyer who was possibly the most deranged poster to Usenet back in the mid-1990s. (They were not by Beavis of Beavis and Butt-head, although I can hear the similarity.)

What happened was this: Mr. Grubor called Martin Hannigan (a well-known Usenet poster) and left a threatening message on Mr. Hannigan's answering machine or voice mail. For everyone's amusement, Mr. Hannigan posted a sound file of the message to the Web.

Then, some creative individual chopped up the recording into individual words and hacked together a Web page (entitled "John Grubor Sez!") where you could pick certain words and create sound files of Mr. Grubor saying anything, with the limitation that you could only use the words from the original telephone message.

Finally, somebody (I don't know whether it was the same person behind "John Grubor Sez!") decided to use this "cut-and-paste" approach to make a song. They assembled the vocals and put some simple music behind it. Tne result was the song "Hey Hannigan."

I don't know why, but I found "Hey Hannigan" very amusing, and I somehow came up with the idea for the hoax. Using a false identity, I inserted "Hey Hannigan" into a list of tracks known to exist and rumored to be on the (then) forthcoming Newpower Soul album. At least one Prince news site published my list as a possible tracklist for Newpower Soul.

Then, once I had created enough "hype," I posted links to the "Hey Hannigan" sound file, with the explanation that it was just a demo version (hence the poor quality).

Most people immediately realized that it was a fake. But at least one person believed that it was a genuine Prince song, and some other people indicated that they weren't sure. (Either Ben or Kevin commented on the PPML that the guitar sounded like Prince.) One person said something like, "Even if it isn't Prince, I wish he'd release something like that!"

When the final Newpower Soul tracklist became known, I made up some excuse about the track being yanked at the last minute (like "Days of Wild" being removed from The Gold Experience). I also claimed that Prince and the NPG would perform it during a television appearance to promote Newpower Soul, and when that didn't happen, my excuse was that "Hey Hannigan" got edited out of the broadcast version.

From that point forward, the joke sort of took on a life of its own, and people would facetiously insert "Hey Hannigan" into things like concert tracklists or discussions of best Prince outtakes.

So there you have it, from the horse's mouth. "Hey Hannigan" is a hoax, not a Prince outtake.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.
