I've been working for the same place for over 8 years. 5 of which I worked in Palo Alto, Ca. I live in San Jose. Last year they moved me to the main office in San Jose. It was a 5 minute drive. I could walk to work. Well now I'm back to my old office and even though I don't mind the being here, I do mind the commute. It's around 17 miles one way.

Anyone have some crazy commute every day?

My commute is the bane of my existence. I've worked at the same hospital for 5 years now. I cannot work closer to home due to the fact that, at first, my husband would have been my direct supervisor (conflict of interest) and now that he has moved up, the guy that would be my boss is beyond horrible and the department is struggling. Not to mention the doctor in charge of the department, whom I love dearly, but would drive me INSANE to work for after working here for so long. Where I work now is fantastic.

Anyways....my commute is 45-60 minutes each way depending on traffic. Rain, sleet, snow, fog you name it, I drive in it. If there is an accident I'm stuck because there's only one way to get from my town to the city where I work. If the weather is really bad, it can take 2-3 hours to get in.

I lose almost 2 hours a day M-F. I spend so much money on gas, not to mention the wear and tear on my car.

I loathe it, yet here I am.

17 miles one way doesn't seem to be that long a commute, but then again, I commute by car about 20 miles a day round trip. The only thing that bothers me are the asshole drivers. I know I will encounter at least 3 going to and from work every day.

80 miles round trip.

Fortunately, it's an easy drive - save for a few snowstorms every year (when I usually work from home). Almost no traffic, to speak of. It takes about the same amount of time it did when I worked downtown (now it's all driving, before it was driving, parking, and walking a couple blocks to the building I worked in). And the amount I spend on gas is roughly equivalent to what I'd spend on parking.

I recently passed on a "career" opportunity (double my current pay, more responsibility, perfect resume builder) but the commute was going to kill me. It was 36 miles each way. In L.A. traffic! I think that would've done me in. I wisely chose my sanity over the $$$.

What helps me during my two hours on the road is my audible.com account. I listen to a lot of audio books and let me tell you they're great. Most books have professional actors reading the text and it's just been amazing, especially with fiction. My hour long commutes flys by. Of course, some days, traffic is so bad that nothing helps...

Wow! I thought I had it bad.

I'm going to start taking the train. It's going to be so much better. I would take the bus, which would be free because I work for the county but it would take forever to get here.

I think we should invent some type of paddles with words like ASSHOLE, or PICK A LANE, ANY LANE so that we can show them to deserving commuters.

This is not new. I saw those advertised back in the 80's or 90's! Maybe not with those slogans, but the paddle messages were something like, "Thank you!" and "Slow down!" You know, much cleaner phrasing.

I read! Not while I'm driving, of course, but when traffic comes to a standstill for more than a minute, I pick up my book and start reading. It's a great way to keep my ass calm in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

7 Miles! You could ride a bike in a lot less than 60 minutes (not that I would either )

LA traffic is insane! I used to live there until '97, and sat in some terrible traffic--PCH-405. It has only gotten worse since I left.

My commute is about 7 miles one way, too, and it takes maybe 15 minutes. I start work around 10, but even if I go at 9 it's not that bad

I could bike or take BART or bus, but it would just be longer that way.

I use the public transit in Toronto and it takes me about 70 minutes each way. I spend the time reading. It's not that bad if you have something to pass the time. I find reading very relaxing.

90 mins round trip - gas is killing me - I told hubby I would rather get a $8 an hour job right by the house.

I work 2.4 miles from home. I take the bus and it takes about 20 minutes each way. When I go to the gym after work I take the light rail there (about 15 minutes) and the bus home from there (about 10).

It would be about 10 minutes if I drove, but it would be ridiculous to do that when the bus takes me from door to door and I would have to pay for parking. And my company subsidizes my transit pass. I don’t own a car anyway.

I’ve considered taking the bus in the morning and walking home (and skipping the gym, heh) but much of the year it’s too hot or too cold. I’ve been thinking about getting a bike to commute on in nicer weather as well, but I’m afraid helmet hair all day isn’t a good look for me.

about 5 mins. 10 if the lights are not in my favour.

It should only take me 15 minutes each way but with schools on the way there it takes me 30 minutes.

It takes me 10 minutes by foot from home to work. It 's so nice, I can even go home for lunch and watch TV take a shower and go back to work...

17 miles in Bay Area traffic might be pretty brutal, though. Some of the worst congestion in North America, I've heard.

The good thing is that I have to be here by 7am so it takes around 25 minutes. If I came in at 8 that would be twice as long.

You've heard about a New York minute. Well there's the L.A. Hour too. Even if you're just going to go to your local convenience store, it'll take an hour. Haha.

On a good day (e.g. I don't have to wait long for the subway, or switch lines) maybe 30 - 35 minutes door to door. On a not-so-good day it could be 40-60 minutes depending on if the trains are f*cked up, if the trains are too crowded (evening commute only) to squeeze on and I have to wait for the next one, if I have to switch and wait for a different line instead of getting the train I need at my closest stop, etc. If I take the bus home (like if there is a stupid Yankees game and all the fans are on my subway line, or it's too unbearably hot to wait in the subway) it takes about 45-50 minutes.

When I lived 17 blocks south of where I am now, I used to walk home almost every night - 35 minutes, so walking along Central Park was far more preferable than stinky, hot subway or crowded, slow bus. Now if I walk home it takes about 50 minutes and is about 1½ miles, but still along Central Park.

A while back I had to get from one side of LA to another (the 101/405 interchange to La Habra or something). It took from 2:30 to 6:00.

Worst traffic I ever sat in, starting at 2:30 on a Friday.

My wife and I drive in together...30 mins each way.

I can't complain.

I work with a guy that drives 1 1/2 hrs ONE WAY, everyday. Sometimes when it snows, that commute will be 3 hrs one way. That's the price that he pays for wanting to live with no neighbors.

Without traffic, 5 minutes. Seriously...its only like 3 miles. With traffic, 40 minutes. (I keep an odd schedule to avoid traffic)
