Geek Alert! DC Renumbering All Titles

[img:$uid]http://i55.tinypic.com/wak5g7.jpg[/img:$uid]

May 31, 2011

DC Comics has announced that it will renumber its entire comics line, beginning in late August and September, with new #1 issues. At the same time, DC will go digital day and date with its full line, offering all new titles digitally on the same day as the print copies are available.
The launch of the new #1s will kick off on August 31st, when DC will release the last issue of Flashpoint, and the first issue of a new Justice League title.
The new Justice League #1 will kick off a storyline by uber-creators Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, who will be working together on a comic title for the first time. The new title will be a “contemporary take on the origin” of the team. Those two titles will be the only two DC comics released on that date.
Following the launch of the new program on August 31st, another 51 DC titles will be renumbered beginning with #1 issues.

i love johns and lee; justice league #1 might be the first superhero comic i purchase in over 2 years.

that said, i doubt this is going to get me back on the bandwagon. i used to visit my local comic book shop weekly and spend an inordinate amount of money on dc comics. but once i realized the poor quality of the crap they were printing and that i was a victim of very clever marketing, i stopped cold turkey. keeping track of their continuity is a hobby in and of itself, and was alot of fun; but they quit making comics for comics sake a long time ago, and have been churning out nothing but junk stories designed to make you buy more comics for too long. this is not going to be the necessary culture change that is going to reinvigorate the superhero comics industry. they need to focus on the audience they have, rather than run some gimic promotion trying to draw in new readers.

1. So which Batman is going to be in the update Justice League line-up: Bruce Wayne (currently leader of Batman Inc.) OR Dick Grayson (one-half of Batman & Robin with Damien Wayne)?

2. I notice Green Lantern Hal Jordan will be back in the Justice League. So does it mean that the Green Lantern Corps is definitely going to lose membership due to the War of the Green Lanterns?

I don't quite understand why they just don't go the Marvel route and have an "Ultimate DC" universe. I think its annoying because I wasn't going to pick up "Flashpoint" but it looks like I have to now, to understand anything Batman related after September.

that's what i thought they were doing with both their 'all-star' line and 'earth 2' line of original re-imaginings. apparently, the audience wasn't there for those; or maybe the talent.

let's not overlook the fact that they are going to have same day digital release. how many new readers is that going to draw? how many current readers is that going to draw out of a comic book shop?

and, honestly, that's one of the worst jim lee images i can recall seeing.

The Flash #1: Francis Manapul & Brian Buccellato

This is pretty cool. Francis Manapual is a fantastic artist, and he gets to debut his writing style on a character he’s truly familiar with. It’s interesting that Geoff Johns isn’t writing the Flash, but I am going to check this out regardless.

Green Arrow #1: JT Krul & Dan Jurgens

To be completely honest, this is probably the book I’m looking forward to the least. Nothing against JT Krul, but his Green Arrow just doesn’t do it for me, and I’m not sure if a reboot is going to change that.

The Fury of Firestorm #1: Gail Simone & Ethan Van Sciver

By contrast, this is the book I am most excited for. I am not a huge fan of Van Sciver, but Gail Simone is one of my favorite writers, and I will admit that the cover has my interest piqued. Are both Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch a Firestorm that can then fused into a singular hero? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Justice League #1: Geoff Johns & Jim Lee

This is the one we’ve known about since the big announcement. I’m sure it’ll be great and all. I like my Justice League to have the heavy hitters in it. It’s very interesting that this is the leadoff book, though. Is it significant story-wise, or is it simply a way to show off the new status quo? Either way, it’s on my radar.

Wonder Woman #1: Brian Azzarello & Cliff Chiang

Wonder Woman has had a rough time as of late, what with costume controversies and failed TV pilots. A fresh start for her can’t be anything but helpful. Getting Azzarello and Chang to do it though? Brilliant.

Aquaman #1: Geoff Johns & Ivan Reis

Speaking of characters who’ve had a rough time, Aquaman is way up there. With Johns writing him, I think he has a fair shake this time out. While I don’t think he’ll ever stop being the butt of jokes, I am definitely going to give this a shot. If Johns gives Aquaman the catchphrase of “Outrageous!” from the Brave and the Bold cartoon, all the better.

Justice League International #1: Dan Jurgens and Aaron Lopresti

This is another highly anticipated book for me. Justice League: Generation Lost proved that you can put these characters together, tell a good story, and not make them the laughing stocks of the DCU. I’m hoping this book continues that trend, but I’m wondering why Blue Beetle isn’t with this group (Maybe a new solo book, please oh please?).

Mister Terrific #1: Eric Wallace & Roger Robinson

Now this is a surprise! I never in a million years would have thought that DC would give Mr. Terrific his own series. I love this character, and I am happy DC is giving him a shot at a solo series. I’m not terribly familar with the creative team, but that’s not a detriment to me picking up the book.

The Savage Hawkman #1: Tony Daniel & Philip Tan

This one is interesting, but I’m not sure if it’s in the “Wow, this could be cool!” way or the “Oh man, check out the train wreck!” way. I’ve never been a huge Hawkman fan, but I like what has been done with the character recently, I hope this version stays true to that.

Captain Atom #1: JT Krul & Freddie Williams II

Captain Atom is another character I’ve never really been in to, but his characterization in Justice League: Generation Lost was pretty great. He was always wondering if he even has the right to call himself human any more. It seems this new series is taking that concept and running with it. Color me curious.

DC Universe Presents #1: Paul Jenkins & Bernard Chang

Finally, we have DC’s newest attempt at an anthology title. Anthologies can be amazing when done well, but most of the time, they aren’t. I have high hopes for this one. Aside from Deadman there, who knows which characters will show up, but I’m sure it’ll be a wild ride.

If they do a good job on this, I'm all for it. But if they think I'm reading 52 origin stories, they can suck it.

One thing I'm happy about: Barbara Gordon back as Batgirl! That's a good thing. And written by Gail Simone. Also a good thing.

Interesting, my daughter loves comics and gaming equally. I started taking her to shops with me when she was still a toddler. Now, her comic book collection nearly rivals my own.

Identity

BATGIRL #1 written by Gail Simone and drawn by Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes with covers by Adam Hughes

The cover to Batgirl #1 by Adam Hughes depicts what certainly appears to be Barbara Gordon behind the cowl, although DC has yet to confirm the identity of the heroine. The original Batgirl, Gordon has been confined to a wheelchair since the events of 1988's Batman: The Killing Joke, in which she was shot in the spine by the Joker. Since that time, Gordon has operated as Oracle, a super-hacker and team leader of the Birds of Prey, and is considered a role model and positive media image for the disabled. The creative team of Batgirl includes outgoing Birds of Prey writer and ComicsAlliance columnist Gail Simone, who has been the writer most associated with Barbara Gordon as Oracle for the last few years.

BIRDS OF PREY #1 written by Duane Swierczynski with art by Jesus Saiz

According to IGN, the new Birds of Prey is a group billed as "Gotham City's covert ops team, taking down the villains other heroes can't touch." The team will now include Katana and Poison Ivy as well as a new character we don't recognize. Any ideas?

CATWOMAN #1 written by Judd Winick with art by Guillem March

An apparent image gallery error on IGN's part revealed a thumbnail for what appeared to be a new Catwoman #1. The larger version was obtained by prodigious fans who located the image file on DC's The Source Web server and distributed it to DC Women Kicking Ass, among other Tumblr blogs. The series has since been confirmed by Mike Marts to IGN, and will be written by Judd Winick with art by Guillem March.

March contributes the cover for Catwoman #1, depicting Selina Kyle in a typically tantalizing pose (although why she would hide diamonds in a condom begs some explanation). Her costume remains unchanged from the one introduced by Darwyn Cooke early in the last decade. Does the emergence of a new Catwoman series mean the end for Gotham City Sirens?

BATMAN #1 written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Greg Capullo

It has been rumored for months that longtime Spawn artist Greg Capullo, recently of Image's Haunt, would be working on a Batman title in some capacity. This cover to Batman #1 featuring the Dark Knight in his new costume confirms that rumor. The series will be written by outgoing Detective Comics scribe Scott Snyder, whose work on that title has been praised by ComicsAlliance. The Capullo artwork above features what seem to be redesigned versions of The Riddler, Scarecrow and Killer Croc, as well as a traditional-looking figure of Two-Face.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1 written and drawn by Tony Daniel

Presently the writer/artist behind Batman, Tony Daniel will move to writing and drawing Detective Comics, the series from which DC Comics took its name and the longest continuously published comic book in the United States. Detective Comics will be relaunched with issue #1 in September.

BATMAN AND ROBIN written by Peter Tomasi and drawn by Patrick Gleason

The current creative team of Batman and Robin will remain with the title, but Bruce Wayne will star alongside Damian Wayne in a father-and-son twist on the concept. Batman and Robin was launched in 2009 as a vehicle for the new Batman, then Dick Grayson, to train Damian in the ways of heroism.

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT written and drawn by David Finch

While only two issues have shipped since its launch in November of last year, David Finch's Batman: The Dark Knight title will return with yet another #1. IGN quotes DC promotional material as saying the book is "a twisted adventure that pulls Bruce Wayne deep into the halls of the famed Arkham Asylum, a jail for Gotham City's most dangerous and criminally deranged." Whether Finch's current The Dark Knight storyline will ever be completed remains unknown.

BATWOMAN #1 cover by JH Williams III

The cover artwork for Batwoman #1 has been circulated for quite some time, but this version with a logo was found on the DC server along with the other new #1s, which if nothing else confirms that the long-awaited series' September premiere should go on as planned.
