MGM Planning Remake of Stephen King's Carrie

[img:$uid]http://i54.tinypic.com/30w5mdf.jpg[/img:$uid]

May 20, 2011

Film studios MGM and Screen Gems have hired Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the playwright and comic book writer, to adapt Stephen King's Carrie for the big screen once more.

Deadline.com reports that the writer will take on the project after he tries to rescue the flop musical Spiderman:Turn off the Dark in light of it's critical mauling. He will also turn his hand to hit musical TV show Glee, as writer and co-producer.

The remake is mooted to stick closer to the original source material than that of Brian DePalma's 1976 classic and will be the second time Aguirre Sacasa has adapted King's work, after turning The Stand into a graphic novel.

The original Carrie starred Sissy Spacek as the titular schoolgirl who, after being ruthlessly bullied by her overly religious mother and mean-spirited classmates, discovers she has telekinetic powers which she uses to wreak revenge.

With development still in its early stages there has been no confirmation on casting or director.

A poorly-received sequel to the original adaptation, The Rage: Carrie 2, landed 23 years after the original, in 1999.

I seem to recall them filming a Carrie remake as a TV movie not too long ago. It was terrible.

Why the hell can't they leave well enough alone! Didn't they already remake it? The first one with Sissy Spacek is the best, so leave it alone!

But if you did that, you would miss out on, for example, the Battlestar Galactica remake that ran a few years ago. That was a hundred million times better than its predecessor. Sometimes, people need to play the Hollywood game in order to get a new project made. That doesn't mean they can't bring something great to that project, even if they are forced by circumstances to call it a remake.

That said, I have no idea if Carrie will be any good. But if it is...awesome! If not, too bad.

confuse I'm really lost on why Hollywood keeps producing these remakes. Critics routinely pan them, there's always a collective public cringing at their announcement, and do they actually do well at the box office?

In the case of ARTHUR 2011, it BOMBED! Hollywood has never been one for smarts though. Even if someone tells them it's shit, they'll go on and release it. You can't get away with that shit in New York!!!
