Harry Potter - Half Blood Prince movie question

Im just working my way back through all the books and rewatching the films which tie together nicely when you know all the background stuff that they dont show...but one thing has baffled me and I was hoping somebody may be able to help.

Bare in mind that some people will only be watching the movies so wont know how it ends so please avoid spoilers but....

Why does Snape tell Harry, in the Half Blood Prince movie that Dumbledore is travelling an wont return until term time?

Is he? Where has he gone? Why is Snape lying (if he is?)

Its the one little detail thats driving me nuts

Thanks

Throughout the movie, Dumbledore meets with Harry to go back through his (Dumbledore's) memories. Dumbledore shows Harry different memories regarding Voldemort. Dumbledore feels Harry will need the information in the memories to help defeat Voldemort.

At the holiday party, where Snape tells Harry that Dumbledore is traveling and will not meet with him until after the holidays, Snape is refering to the meetings where Dumbledore shares memories.

Harry asks Snape where is Dumbledore traveling. Snape then give Harry a snubbing kind of look and turns away without answering. Snape does this because he feels it inappropriate of Harry to ask where the Headmaster is traveling. Harry is just a student. Snape is a professor and Dumbledore is the Headmaster. It's really not Harry's place to ask such a question etc. So Snape just gives him a look and walks away.

(One of my favorite parts in the move. giggle )

I'm firmly planted in denial

Oh and to answer your question. LOL

Snape is not lying. Dumbledore really is traveling, but his travels are top-secret, hence another reason not to tell Harry where Dumbledore is.

Hence edit...

Thanks - I thought it must be significant but obviously not. I thought maybe he was travelling for a 'reason' but the reason I was thinking of had already happened.

It just threw me that it was made a big deal of and that the Ministry knew nothing about it.

Because Dumbledore is travelling. He's searching for missing hoarcruxes and one of the incidents Dumbledore gets into is the reason why his hand is damaged. Also, his hand is damaged is only the beginning. Dumbledore had a terminal condition and was set to die eventually due to the condition.

It's all explained in the second half of the last book.

Great, great, great books.

That's what I thought but, without giving anything away to those who haven't read/seen the entire series, Dumbledore doesn't seem to know the extent of the horcruxes and I got the impression that diary and 'black hand' aside Dumbledore thought that was perhaps it because he seemed suprised after seeing slughorns memory revealing how many.

That is correct. That is why Dumbeldore needed Slughorn's true memory of that discussion with Tom Riddle.

So why is he travelling looking for horcruxes (if that's what he's doing) if he isn't aware there are more. (he hasn't seen Slughorns true memory at this stage has he )

he was working on a hunch, and his hunches were usually pretty good.

he needed slughorns memories to confirm his hunch
