Attn, Org bicyclists: What kind of lock you rolling with? So... with the weather finally warmer, I'm gearing up for some increased bike riding. I won't be in particularly tough parts of town, but I appreciate some need for security.
I'm thinking of getting a Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit U-Lock and maybe a secondary chain lock of some sort, but this route is expensive!
What sort of locks are you guys using? And have you had bad experiences with other locks that I should avoid? Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I use one of these.

But I'm only locking my bike in a locked, common garage (not outside for long periods of time) - so the security doesn't have to be top-notch. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. | |

You know, i was watching a cops show or something a while back and thought, "people are STILL stealing bikes?" Cuz really, how much are bikes nowadays...
That is UNTIL my husband and I went to a bike store to purchase some...
CLEARANCE prices were around 5-600 dollars!! I about died! Soooooo ya, buy a good lock! ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~ | |

That's pretty straightforward. I'm thinking of getting something like this for short jaunts and saving any monster lock for occasions my bike might need to be unattended for longer stretches.
I'm shocked at the price of these things, though. The Fahgettaboudit U-Lock I want is $129 at a local shop. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

No lock. The 'Scorpion' is suitably old and crap that it won't get stolen when left in the village. We're pushing it having a bell, basket and new saddle though.
Basically nobody rides a mountain bike, racing bike, or in any way masculine bike, in Thailand. In fact, many don't even have an adult's bike. It's quite normal to see a grown man riding a bike best suited to a 10 year old girl.

I think it's kind of liberated, actually. No need to put on butch pretenses in every part of life.

I use a sound chain. Around the chain is a protective fabric, in order to protect it from getting cut with a portable grinding machine. The lock itself is designed the same way, to protect it from grinding machines that is mostly used to steal bikes.
It's not only the lock that is important, also the way you lock your bike.
Attach it to a pole or fence. Have the lock go through the frame and the wheel. Otherwise, it's easy to just take the wheel out and walk away with the lock.
