I completely disagree with this. A 400 lb person who knows they'll spill over into somebody else's seat should not be accomodated on their own damned terms.
Airlines *do* need to increase seat size--they're simply terribly uncomfortable (they were uncomfortable when I weighed 160 lbs!). But, the argument that Americans are getting fatter doesn't fly for me. Nor is the idea that a person with a 45+ inch waist entitled to fly on a plane on their own defined terms.
This woman has just given even more reason to get back in to the gym and work my ass off.

The airline should have "big" seats for big people. Simple as that. We have handicaped ramps and seeing eye dogs etc. , why not big seats for big people? Everything is supposed to go nowadays, hell, I even read that some lady with a "medical condition" just won the right to masturbate at work (up to six times a day only though) and yet, everybody makes a big damn deal about fat people like they have no damn rights. Sickening. It's hard enough on them, would you enjoy being 400 pounds? |

Seriously.... How is this even a valid arguement.... Its irrelevant because most people are not 400lbs... we CHOOSE not to be... its a choice SHE made all on her own... I think the 2 seat policy for larger people is fair and appropriate.
I also think the only thing the airline did wrong was not speak to her in a more private manner...but even then, her claim that she was embarrassed to be told she needed two seats is really silly...everyone around her already knew she was obese, they didn't need to be told by some airline worker to come to that conclusion.
Since all she really is doing is complaining, it just comes off as she was just looking for media attention....probably to try and get more readers for her blog.
She had already regularly purchased two seats to fit herself. |

Did she not purchase them this time around?
I saw her interview on the Today show. There is no way she can fit into one seat comfortably. |

I'll advocate seats for big people right after there are seats designated for us tall folks. I can't lose height.
And you can argue exit row seating, but those are open to everyone and cost more. Unless you're cool with these proposed big person seats costing more than a normal seat and being open for purchase by anyone, then it is not at all fair. |

Yeah, she apparently weighs just under 300lbs now but routinely bought 2 tickets when weighing between 300-400lbs. Maybe she thought she was at the point to where she could fit? I have yet to see the Today show interview. |

My query alludes to a possible double standard scenario. No-one was seated yet.
So you think it's a subjective, not objective observation that led to the staff at the gate to suggest she was too big for a single seat?
Really?!!!
1st - I can only base my opinion on what has been written or said about the incident. Really.
Employees must enforce company policies. So I don't think Mr. Dale (steward at the gate) was expressing his own opinion. He was however rude to the three women. That said.
I questioned if the large male was required to purchase two seats. If he was questioned about his weight in same crass manner as were these three women. But now that I've thought about it, more. His 315 lbs is muscle. (hubba, hubba - ) So...I was wrong in thinking there might be a double standard.

i was joking around...my bad...
but all these people calling for the availability of larger seats r ignoring the existance of first class. Wider seats, more leg room.
and guess what....they're two expensive. Imagine if they made the whole plane like that...Barely ANY of us
could afford to fly.

Don't quit it, I think people are just VERY honest on this org, which is really a good thing, as people in the "real world" just say what is politically correct and what you want to hear. I guess the anonimity (did I spell that right?) on the org is what makes people just tell the truth. Sadly, there is alot of bigotry but I think there is everywhere you just don't see it. |

well sorry you feel this way but thats just how i feel about it
dont leave the org just because you disagree with me
i dont have anything against fat people but " equal treatment " for what?!
its not healthy to be big not mention the social pressures
seems like your getting worked up by my "big bitch" statement then what i REALLY said i do think they should accommodate but there needs to be a limit on the weight of the seating and how much it can hold
300 and down is fair enough for a alot of overweight people
i dont see why people keep calling me out
i said it time and time again that they should accommate
maybe its because i called her a big bitch and they cant see past that
