I'm starting to notice a trend on television

I dunno if it's always been this way, I guess it has, but not quite this bad before.

The kids and I went without cable for a year and only watched dvd's. We got the cable turned back on last May, and ever since then I am growing outraged and disgusted with the stuff thats on TV.

It's nearly impossible to put on a program without some scantilly clad woman in it. Even the 'kids' channels have tweens and teens dressed like ho's and prancing around half naked. The female body doesn't bother me and I think it's beautiful but the way that it's portrayed is whats bothering me. My daughter is 6 years old and I don't want her thinking that THIS is how a girl needs to dress or look to be attractive. It's out of hand.

Every movie my husband and I put on has a naked woman in it somewhere. Which in a lot of movies it seems pointless to even have that on there. It has nothing to even do with the plot. I don't want to sound like a freak but I've noticed ever since we got the cable put back on my self esteem has dropped a bit.......so imagine what it puts in a young girls head if she is constantly subjected to these images.

Like I said, maybe I'm just over sensitive because we went a year without seeing it, but either way, it gets me in an uproar. I think I'm going to get the cable cut off again. lol

Not to offend, but I'm always suspect of anyone who has cable turned off on purpose.

Women have always been excessively sexualized in TV and film. That's nothing new. And as long as society finds it acceptable, then it will keep happening and will only get worse. I've often wondered why actresses won't say, "No, I won't show my tits. It has nothing to do with the plot". But, I guess young, aspiring actresses do what they have to do in order to get the part. Funny how the same rules don't apply to males actors. They don't even have to take their shirts off most of the time to be in a film.

If I had a daughter, I would go to great lengths to make her understand that snagging a man (or a woman, for that matter) isn't the key to a happy life. I'd also show her that women who rely on their sexuality for currency tend to have a rude awakening when they age.

I threw my cable out, for that reason.

And because I just couldn't stand the violence and superficial crap on it.

That's when I got addicted to the org lol

Tv became a male thing. Males make it and watch it.

BTW: you are Miss Org. The most beautiful girl on the org (next to Erin ofcourse). You have no reason for low self esteem no no no!

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

TLC, History channel, Nat Geo, the food network, the discovery channel, PBS, Nick Jr.

no slutty chicks on these channels. (not that I've noticed anyway)

I have boys so...LUCKILY they have no interest in icarly or on deck or any of those shows BUT you have the power. I know Daisey probably loves some of those shows but...you are the boss, so just say no. You can set parental controlls on your TV so the kids can't even check certain channels or shows.

My boys do love crappy cartoons and we let them watch plenty but there is a limit and only we can enforce that limit.

"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok

Just go back to not watching tv, or barely watching it. I'm at the point now where I pretty much almost never watch tv, unless it's stuff like "House" or "Man vs Food" or "He-Man" or something like that lol . I don't even really miss it much - when I want to watch something, I usually just go to YouTube instead.

Thanks Djj. There are so many Beautiful people here on the org, thats for sure.

............................not just Erin. rolleyes

Anyway, ya Ace thats my main thing, is having two daughters. They don't need to think that is how they need to look, dress, act.

As far as the whole tv being aimed at males thing. I dunno. Thats what irritates me. First of all you don't see dudes walking around like that on every blessed thing on tv. Talk about double standards. For example, I was nursing Madi in the truck in the mall parking lot the other day, and my husband was all trying to cover me every time someone walked by. I asked him what the problem was and he said that I am for his eyes only. lol Okayyyyyyy thats a very nice sentiment, well then his eyes should be looking at me only. But that is just not realistic with the over sexualization of women everywhere you look.

I guess you're just gonna have to be very selective and spend some extra time picking and choosing what your little ones can see. I'll tell you the truth, one of the reasons I'm so apeshit crazy for the shows we talk about in the reality thread is because (outside of late night sex tv) tv here is is very bland...because it's always educational lol For me to turn on the television here I am confronted with an endless stream of travel and geography documentaries, animal kingdom shows, European history, roundtable discussions on politics, classical music...and cooking shows. I like the reality soaps as a diversion from seeing unedited news of global wars and blown up bodies day in and day out...still, I bet that if I had to be bombarded with a larger portion of tv from home I'd be mortified, too. Maybe you have to check online for parent tv guides and family friendly reccommendations. It's not much but it might be a start in the direction you want to keep your family in sun

I haven't had cable in over a year also. Not only can I not afford it, but I'm not going to pay money for 80 channels full of damn reality shows. It had gotten so bad that even networks like TV Land were showing reality shows also.

All they are doing is making the cheapest made shows possible and they can get away with it now because they've raised a generation that is used to cheaply made things. But what trips me out, is the fact that they don't want to spend any money to make TV shows anymore but they want people to pay to see the cheap ass shows they made (paying as in having cable).

When I moved, I didn't get cable and I went out and bought a converter box and rabbit ears for my TV and the only thing I watch mostly, other than DVDs, is the news because there's just nothing on TV anymore with or without cable. The damn reality shows have even taken over the networks that aren't on cable. It's rediculous. If I want to see something cheap, I'll go down to the ho stroll and look at the crack ho's.

Andy is a four letter word.
