2.5/5 Didn't like how it ended and a couple of other things that bug me, but I guess that's how the book is, which I'll never read, so I won't be too critical. I take my "looking like Clint Eastwood" comment back, didn't know, got it now.

"The Dilemma". Yuck, didn't like it at all, and here's why:
IT SHOULD BE A CRIME TO MARKET A MOVIE AS A COMEDY WHEN IN FACT, IT IS NOT A COMEDY.
I don't mind if a movie is marketed as a comedy and isn't funny - at least they tried. But THIS movie is NOT a comedy and they don't even try to play it off as one.
Yet, it was marketed as a comedy. Boo.
Now, let me list all the things wrong with this horrid movie. Don't worry about spoilers, because if you ever watch this movie, you'll get what you deserve:
1. Vince Vaughn's character did everything right, and yet he's the BAD guy?!? HE is apologizing? Screw that! He went to the well for Kevin James, and no one ever thanked him once! He should have dumped all those losers, that would have been the only happy ending possible.
2. The Queen Latifah character was totally irrelevant and I felt embarrassed for her. Obviously, she was supposed to have another scene or two, but the director must have felt, "Screw it, we've got enough of her to draw in some African Americans, so who cares if her character comes off looking like a nutjob?" She should sue.
3. Kevin James' character was a loser through and through. You mean to tell me he and his wife are all lovey-dovey at the bar, at the anniversary party, etc. but in actuality he hasn't boinked her in 6 months? You sure could have fooled me. Total inconsistency.
4. Speaking of total inconsistencies, Kevin James is sneaking off to Vietnamese massage parlors for handjobs, and yet he never has to apologize to his wife for THAT? That's the reason she cheated on him! But SHE is the villain? Maybe, but James' character was every bit as slimy as Winona Ryder's, yet he's played for sympathy. Yeah, right - married guys, go get some handjobs from a masseuse and then see if you are hailed as a sympathetic figure by anyone.
5. They took a baseball bat to a 1970 convertible Challenger. I know it wasn't a real Hemi Challenger, but still it was a 1970 Challenger convertible. Taking a baseball bat to a 1970 Challenger convertible should be a crime punishable by complete revocation of all film industry privileges for all involved.
6. The ending was so stupid. By this point of the movie, if you don't hate Kevin James' character, you just haven't been paying attention. He punches out Vince Vaughn twice, for no other reason that Vaughn tried to save his marriage, and he gets to shoot a puck at a Blackhawks game? Really? And of COURSE he makes the last shot. BFD. I wanted to throw up.
Now, here's what's right with this movie:
1. Jennifer Aniston is not in it.
I give this movie negative two stars out of infinity stars.

Lars Von Trier's: Melancholia
Man, that was awsome. Not for people who dislike "boring" stuff or people who think Tarkovskiy is a city in Spain, but not exactly "difficult". It's not his best work .. but it's damn good. The last scene is just .. un-believable. And Kirsten Dunst is excellent - the best I've ever seen from her.
9/10

I read about this movie's reception at Cannes last month. It sounds like something I'd want to see.

If you like comedy, you should watch this. It has a really good cast:
Ed Helms (The Hangover) John C Reilly (Step Brothers) Anne Heche Sigourney Weaver Kurtwood Smith (Red from That 70's Show) Stephen Root (Office Space)
and it's really good. I laughed pretty much the whole way through.
If I had to pick two movies to compare it to, I guess I'd say it's somewhere between Office Space and The 40 Year Old Virgin. And I guess, The Hangover, too, in some ways.
Super awesome.

yes, it was bad. I was surprised to learn it was a Ron Howard movie, it felt so slight.
Another idiotic thing. Why would Vince not tell his finace what was going on? HE is going to ruin his whole realationship over a secret like this? Nope, he would tell her the moment he fond out! I would!
I get pretty bothered by non-comedies masquerading as comedies, too. Cyrus was another one. Screw that movie! My Legacy

Go ahead and watch Melancholia. But don't blame me for recommending it.

I've seen:
Europa/Zentropa Dogville Dancer In The Dark Antichrist
I can't imagine you liking any of those.

.. Then I can promise you, you won't like this one! It has none of the Kingdoms sarcasm or humour. It's more like the anti-thesis to Tree of Life actually. Same scope, same focus on family drama, but TOTALLY opposite in mood. Tree of Life: "Love is what makes the worldl". Melancholia: "Shit happens, life sucks. Love while and what you can!"
Anyway. | |

If you already dig Von Trier I can only recommend it. I think it's his best since Breaking the Waves. The last scene is etched in my mind. Both utterly depressing and at the same time life assuring, uplifting and strong.

I really wanted to like it... especially since I'm a 70's Spielberg nut and a LOST fan.... but it just didn't seem to do anything new at it's core or exceptionally re-imagined for me, and those old movies and the show were all about something new with the old being re-imagined.
I guess to me it felt like a Kareoke version of classic pop song.
