They are beautiful and smell incredible! I used to grow them myself, but Minnesota is not the best place for them. Our spring can be very harsh....windy and rainy, so the poor flowers really don't stand a chance. Lilacs do much better in our neck of the woods, and they smell incredible as well!

In the park where I walk, there are solid purple and solid white violets that are mixed together in one bunch. They look really pretty, especially when the sun is out. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Did you know you can eat dandelions from root to petals? Its a great cleanser for the blood and good for asthmatics like me... I like to make tea from the yellow fowerheads. The leaves make a good bitter salad and the roots are good in teas also, though I never tried them.
Look at the sparrows.... they eat the seeds off the dandelion heads after they pop open.

When I was a kid I picked some dandelions and gave them to my first grade teacher as a gift. Later on I wondered where they went, and happened to glance in the garbage can, and saw she'd tossed them in there at some point... I never did feel the same way about her after that .
I had no idea at the time that dandelions weren't technically considered to be a flower. I still kinda don't get how a lot of people can't stand them and go nuts when they see them; as far as weeds go, they're pretty nice to look at. Damn, that was not a nice thing for that teacher to do. She could have at least waited until the school day was over, and after the kids had left, before throwing them away. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

And actually at the time I remember it feeling like a huge slap in the face, like I tried to express fondness or affection to someone and they just....threw it away lol. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

I know that people in Europe used to make "coffee" out of them during the second World War when regular coffee wasn't available. I suppose there isn't much of a difference between the "coffee" and "tea" varieties, ha.

are they the same as frangipani? I got a lei made of them last week at the kava ceremony in Fiji
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yup, they're one and the same. Frangipani is the common name for plumeria.
Yeah, they make leis out of them. When I was in Hawai'i last week, they were everywhere. They just made the air thick with perfume...
