I know halwa, but it's not something I'd want to eat too much.

The Greeks and the Balkans have fine cheeses that go well with pasta and sallads. Half of the time when I buy those I have idea what I am buying.

Couscous was pretty hot when it first appeared in the grocery stores in the 90s and nobody knew what the hell it was supposed to be.

I like it how the swedes add lingonberry jam to pretty much everything. Meatballs and lingonberry jam, fine by me. I'll have that today, hah.

We just don't eat that stuff with meatballs. lol

I like lingonberries, but they seem to be disappearing from the, uhm, nordic cuisine. Especially the younger generations don't seem to be that appreciative of them anymore.

English food, like Sunday roasts, are like 'ethnic' food to me now. lol I love it when I can get it. I also like Italian, Mexican, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Laos/North East Thailand. Anything really. Western food especially though, is a treat here, even if it's not always that good. Spanish, French, whatever. It just mixes it up a bit. I eat maybe 50% Thai food and 50% my own mediocre pasta meals, or salad, simple soups with bread, porridge oats, steak, fried chicken, ham sandwiches... kinda western stuff. I'd have to go with Thai though for my favourite, despite getting sick of it from time to time. Thai food is awesome.

speaking of your dried melon, my malaysian friend gave me salted prunes to try. They were SOOOOO salty! lol it was crazy people could even eat it!

i wouldn't fancy those much, but that reminds me of an indian girl i went to school with who ate her apple with salt.. apple in one hand & salt cellar in the other. all the kids were eek

lol I used to do that! I also did it with lemons. Slice a lemon in two and sprinkle with salt and suck away! Several friends told me as kids they would push a peppermint stick down the center of one of those whole dill pickles. confused

Anyway... what are some of you guys' favorite foods from cultures not your own?

  • Chinese
  • Italian
  • Thai
  • Ethiopian*

*A friend had their birthday party at an Ethiopian restaurant and I must admit I found it ironic to be eating this when the country is so known for famine. But, I must admit, the food was really, really good.

I love Filipino food that is about exotic as it gets for me, I have never been outside of the USA sad

Adobo - chicken

Afritada

Pansit

the very sinful Lechon :drool2)

Lumpia

BBQ pork on the stick

Grilled Wings on a stick(whatever it's marinated in is tasty as hell)

Desserts

Turon OMG!

I was introduced to this food at a single mother retreat.....OMFG I was in heaven....the breakfast was this ball of white rice, onions egg and meat.

I thought I was at a 5 star restaurant after this meal...it was so incredibly delicious and full of love! Told that is was very traditional and was a special treat for us. I use to work with nurses who were Filipino and we could not WAIT for a party function at work....we knew that the food would be the fucking bomb! We ate all freaking shift! They would even make extra Lumpia for me to freeze and take home....man oh man my mouth is watering just of the thought razz

I haven't had this food in about 5 years now....I moved from where the local restaurants were. sad

mediterranean foods, primarily greek and italian. I think since I have a very low tolerance for hot spicy foods, mediterranean foods tend to have a wide range of dishes that are not spicy hot.

but there are foods in most ethnic groups I like, there are some I'm not familiar with so I can't say all groups.

Sometimes I go to this very small Austrian delicatessen shop just to eat an authentic "Wiener Schnitzel" because the German one is fake (hence the name "Schnitzel nach Wiener Art" lol ).

That Austrian dude who runs the deli is arrogant as hell, probably hates my people, and the schnitzel is VERY expensive there, but hey, at least I get the real deal. And they make it fresh from scratch.

Not sure of spelling but it's pronounced doong-zha. My Mother in Law makes dozens of them at a clip (a few times a year)... Hers are made with rice, peanuts, dried shrimp, egg yokes, all spiced pork shoulder, and (sp?) lap tsiang (preserved Chinese sweeet sausage).

They come in all varieties (I stick w/ homemade b/c I can never read signs in the asian markets...

I agree with this. I'm loving the halwa I have (I bought a half-kilo chunk), but it's quite sweet. I imagine it'd get old really fast if I got totally piggish over it.
