Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.

After that, it would be A New Hope ("Star Wars") and The Phantom Menace.

Return Of The Jedi doesn't stand up well as an individual movie (even though some of the series' greatest battles are in this episode).

I guess I just love them all!

biggrin

So Jar Jar is racist...

but no-one says that Boss Nass or Captain Tarpals are racist.

yet the only difference between them is that the actor that plays Jar Jar is black.

I have never heard either of those two characters. What movie were they in?

Everything said about Jar Jar can be applied to all the Gungans (sp?). Just as Asian stereotypes were in play in shaping the trade federation, middle eastern stereotypes for the slave trader, etc.

There was a time when Lucas' characters were truly out of this world, but for the prequel trilogy he seems to willing to rely on existing images.

Well if those characters are portrayed as a specific race that is stereotypically embarrassing then the reasoning behind them would not be racist per se but lets say notr too culturally respectful..I m not saying Jar Jar is a "racist" character..I think what folks are saying is he is based on an undersireable aspect of a certian race or ethnicity. Im sure Lucas had the best intent i his heart..he is just not too well versed in diversity etc. which is understandable( well not really in this day and age) but still... why nbot just have jar jar stand up and go DY-NO-MITE when the good guys win lol

Yeah? Did you ever think to look inward about what you yourself think of different ethnicities? Don't you think that if you didn't think whatever about Asians, you wouldn't realize that George was "trying" to make the trade federation represent Asians? Do you think Gungans are equal to black people? Perhaps you should stop trying to figure out what Georgie boy was trying to convey, and look inwards towards your own thoughts. wink

I'm just pointing out that well known stereotypes were in play and they correlated with stereotypical physicality in those characters, as well as their speech patterns. It all fit too well to be coming from me.

Shoot. I didn't realize I was making myself all Yoda-ish, but I notice it now. biggrin Anyhow, I wasn't trying to do that.

And, I can honestly say, I never would've thought a "gungan" was a black person, or a member of the trade federation was Asian. This is honestly news to me. confused

But I did figure out that Klingons on Trek were equal to Russians. lol Ehem.

Fine. Don't bother. It's obvious we will never see eye to eye on this. Obviously, I am not a minority. I am white, I was born white, I always will be white. I can't help it. I do not have black people's experiences in my mind, because I am not black. I am white. My parents are white, and their parents before them. I have less melanin in my skin than you. There, are you happy?

Now, I have to pee. I've been drinking a lot of orange juice so I won't get this flu going around. Orange juice makes me urinate a whole lot...

That statement may be truer than you know. In support of Battier she has always came across as open minded and i believe she is sincere that she doesn't pick up on the subtle and not so subtle messages in the media(and elsewhere for that matter). She seems open minded and willing to learn.

battier you and me seing eye to eye or not, you realizing or not realizing some truths or myths does not make me happy nor effect me in any way...(so am I happy..yes because Im fixin to have some ribs and beans and cornbread and the game comes on soon) This is the way of the world and I am resigned to the fact that there will always be difficulty between people in general.. even if we all looked the same etc there would be something found to make a difference bwetwen people..Some people can see it or not and in the long run it makes not one bit of difference to me or in the world. Agreed some of the "more" objectionable material was removed. Nonetheless, these images shaped the generation of today's writers, producers, directors; and many of these images remain on screen today, and are echoed in the works of others. The fact that these shows are still on the air reflects a level of acceptability about them by network programmers and viewers alike most likely because their constant viewing of these stereotypes in the past and present has blinded them into thinking these images are normal.
