J-Hud and Monique's Lack of Presence On Big Screen

I'm wondering why neither Jennifer Hudson or Monique have not had any major film roles since their Oscar wins. Jen had a small part in "Sex In the City" and a role in "Secret Lives Of Bees", which I don't think was a box office block-buster. Monique, to my knowledge, has not appeared in any films since her win. I recall reading an interview after she won her Golden Globe, the interviewer asked Mo has she been receiving a lot of scripts to read and she said she hadn't even received one!eek

Anyone have any theories as to why an Academy Award has failed to garner these ladies some major movie roles???

yeahthat

and also, Monique has one of the most ham-fisted acting styles around. doesn't lend itself to a lot when your acting ability is limited to 2 things. that is if you want to be an actor, instead of just being in movies. that Oscar doomed her, if it's the former.

Because they're not primarily actresses?

Jhud is a singer.

Monique is a comedienne.

That too. Just like with Jamie Foxx. Even though he has had a few roles after Ray, I primarily think of him as a comedian and singer.

yep... Monique is a comedian and Jennifer Hudson is a singer. Their roles are limited in any movie. I like Secret life of Bees...

Has Sandra Bullock been working much since her Oscar win? I ask because I just saw 'The Blind Side' the other day and I didn't see much in the film or her performance that was Oscar-worthy. confused

Well, I guess it might be because it was a true story. True stories showing people with epic life struggles emerging victorious always charm Academy voters like bees to honey. They also get really into how much the actor has done to transform themselves and really convince us that they are the real life person they're portraying. I figure if she was ever going to get an Oscar, she had the right (or at least easiest) formula in place to put her in the running for it.

Feels like if an actor has some box office hits, even if they're not really critically acclaimed, gets to big celeb status, then manages to hang around long enough, they throw an Oscar their way the first opportunity they get (i.e. any movie with at least a little depth, a 'serious' role as opposed to comedy or mindless action). I don't know if that's the case though. I don't watch a lot of movies, I must confess. lol

yeahthat And I certainly wouldn't include Jennifer or Monique in the same category with Sandra. Sandra's been in the game for almost 20 and produced a lot of her movies the last 10 years. She can work whenever she WANTS to. She's got major clout in Hollywood. Besides she planned to take off sometime due to the adoption of her kid but she's been working and has like 3-4 movies coming out this year.

Jen and Mo on the flip have zero pull and I think a lot of folks view their Oscar performances as one-note flukes and that their range is prolly limited. Besides, if you ain't Halle black actresses have limited opportunities to work. Just look at the type of BS Angela Bassett's been in lately. confused

Well as for Monique I dont know how many more major film roles she's gonna have...but isn't Jennifer Hudson supposed to play Winnie Mandela in a biopic?....Could be big if she does it justice.

There just aren't many roles in Hollywood for black actresses. That's the bottomline. It doesn't have anything to do with them being singers are comedians, because there are a bunch of white actresses that are singers and comedians that are getting steady work.

every actress has to portray for a role of a character written... if roles are not written fit for people like J Hud and Monique... then they will not work. I mean Tyler Perry is one of the few people that keep black actors working, but many movies like that are far and few inbetween. I think both women will be type-cast and only thought of for a traditional "black famale" role.... and there are just sooo many wonderful black actresses that can't find work simply because the roles just aren't there to play.

Also, they may get leading roles in smaller productions that may not go mainstream at all.

You saw what J-Hud's next role was after her Oscar win; she played an assistant to Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex in the City. That's how Hollywood does it.

I saw her in that role nod

... but how Samuel Jackson gets all those roles he gets.... lol Sam gets casting directors to re-write roles just for him.

I think more casting people bend for male roles than they do for female roles... and if the women are curvy and look too "fat" (which is the case for both J Hud and Monique) then those spots are even more rare.

Us Americans yet have a long way to go to embrace a fat chick as the heroine/sex symbol, of any race..... people like Halle Berry will keep snatching up those sought after roles to play victim/herione/love interest. Big girls get no love in mainstream.

*** J Hud did lose tons of weight.... but she is still too curvy, women like Sanaa and Gabrielle would be picked over J Hud, competition is fierce!
