Cyberstalking

Anybody ever have any experience with this?

Someone sent me this who was being stalked. Sounds dangerous and scary:

There are plenty of nutcases out there on this interweb thingummy. I have the please of dealing with a lot of them in running this site biggrin

Seriously though... it is a serious issue and I actively discourage people from putting too much personal info, pictures etc on the net. The Org may seem like a nice intimate club, but anyone can register an account really... all I'm saying is that it's good to retain some privacy.

Exactly! One of the worst things is the WhoIs database! They post all your personal information right on the net! mad

I wanted to hunt down relatives who I was unaware of by way of the Internet. In fact, my site was getting quite a deal of attention, from possible relatives. I got in touch with real ones who were able to add a lot to the tree.

Unfortunely, it also got attention from those whose intentions were not related to genealogy, and I took it down.

Next time, I know better...I will have one up again, just not just yet.

Do you know anybody like that LaV?

I could name some names, but they don't want me to name them... but maybe I should name them in a sly offhand way anyway, despite their wishes...

What do you think?

Anybody?

It's really fucking weird. Sometimes when you don't get along with someone (not unusual!), you just agree to ignore them. Sounds easy, no?

But apparently, sometimes shit continues to go on! Man! I've never heard about this sort of thing until my friend was telling me about this kind of behavior and how scary it could get...

Damn, there's some fucked up people out there...

And some people tell you to continue to ignore it after it escalates! And even try to turn you into the victim! (From wjhat this person told me...)

Man! That's like telling someone who is constantly abused to just suck it up! Like it's their fault! Horrifying!

I wonder about society sometimes. Not often, but I wonder...

Really! If it's it not too painful, please tell me LaV!

This is new to me!

And I'm very sorry for you. hug

How do I make a long story short?

thanks for the hug

I was an avid online gamer...got close to the regular players (like here), you know...icq...all that stuff...clan member...

It started out seemingly like shootin the shit, you know? Then this one person, wanted to meet me - it seemed innocent enough, and they lived in Minnesota.

Anyways, I met this person at a mutual location...and things took a wild turn from then on. I met him, and all we talked about, over lunch, was games.

I knew he was married, but thought nothing of it, since it was purely platonic.

Anyways...fast-forwarding...

At this point, this person is now coming to my salon to get his hair cut...and slowly starts to show his colors. I am even doing his wife's hair! :O

He keeps dropping bigger, and bigger tips...when it got to $1000...I said, wait a minute.

Couple times this person just showed up at my place of work...it's really a long story...

But it scared me, and good. I can be very naive. Haven't seen or spoke to this person in a year or more...

$1,000? drool

But seriously, yeah, you have to be careful I guess, because sometimes even the most innocent relationships can get somehow blown out of shape.

If only ignoring somebody was enough...

Some people don't want to stop though, after months and even years in some cases! From what my friend told me.

I'm suggesting that she get more professional advice, but I don't know what that would be. If anybody has any advice for my friend, please let me know.

How did I end it?

I told him over and over and over how I felt.

I must have told him 1,000 times that he was married, that I was just a friend, and that I am not comfortable with his actions.

He finally got the hint.

It's tough without more details, 9s...but if you need advice, just let me know. A great deal more happened than I mentioned...you know where to find me.

Yeah, I had this man who I'd known for a few months in Internet chat rooms start telling me where I worked, when I worked, and threatening to see me. I thought he was kidding, but then he told me exactly where I worked, and there is no way I ever shared that info with anyone on the Web. That was not funny at all. The only think I could figure is that he was keeping notes on different things I had been saying and then started doing some research on me and found the connections to find out who I really was, where I lived, and worked, what my phone number was, etc. Scary stuff. You gotta be careful no matter what you say. Today you say one personal thing, tomorrow it's one other thing, and the day after another thing. Each time it seems safe, but you never know who's keeping tabs.

I considered this, but you know what? His innocent wife and children were way more important than me. He never threatened me, or stuff like that. I don't even know if he did it before, or since...so I didn't want to do that, you know?
