Skrimp

Okay, do people actually say the word "skrimp" in real life? I see it on this board all the time and it makes me laugh but where does this come from? Do people not know how to pronounce shrimp or do they actually think those sea creatures are called skrimps??

Only once have I heard someone say "skrimps" not knowing it as a joke. When I corrected her she huffed at me for "talking all property".

Let it go.

I hate it. A guy I was dating once used it when ordering.

We never went out again. He couldn't believe it when I told him why.

Gorgeous too. I can't do ignorance though.

I guess I've just never noticed anyone saying it. I'll have to listen closely. I lived in Texas for a while and they were probably more likely to say it down there than here in Maine. We have our own made up words...

The first time I heard it was from a tv character Jamie Foxx played on In Living Color named Wanda; I believe Wanda was a big fan of skrimps lol

I know what you mean! If a man I'm interested in makes a major grammatical/social error, and I clearly know he is not kidding, it just kills it for me. I can't be worried about him embarrassing me in front of family, friends or coworkers. Once, I heard a guy say, "Oh, don't touch that. It's mines." Needless to say, he was toast.

How do you survive emotionally when you are in Trinidad/Tobago spit ?

And I hope you are not that strict when it comes to peoepl who don't have English as their first language. I might be worried from now on when we talk that I make too many mistakes wink !

I don't know where I picked it up - likely in Baltimore/DC as I used to live there. Everyone used to say it jokingly, it was just a thing. I dunno. lol.

I do know that I have said it to other people who have been shocked people actually said it. To me, breaking out into random, jokey colloquialisms is just part of conversation. A lot of people in the B-more area also say "warsh" and being serious about it, thus a lot of people say it jokingly too.

Why do you think I didn't visit for over ten years? lol

I know English isn't your first language, Martina so if you pronounce a few words incorrectly, it's no big deal. hug

My friends and I say "swimps" - but as a joke. As in, "What say we grill some swimps?"

Oh! Do I have a story for you!! I used to work in a hospital residency program. Both the chairman of the department and the program director were from the West Indies. One was from Guyana and the other from Trinidad. We were discussing the ratings or grades, if you will, of some of the residents and my bosses said, "We think Dr. Smith should recieve 3's," (on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest). I couldn't resist. I said, "You sure you don't want to change that to TREES?!"

They were falloff after I said that. I used to love messing with them and their accents. lol

Ok, after this, I'll shut up. I just have a thing for using correct English when speaking/writing seriously or professionally. My mother always told me it was rude to correct people, but I just can't help it sometimes when I hear blatant grammatical errors. I used to work with a woman who would routinely say things like, "I'm going to get my hair did." or "I ain't doin that unlesson(?) you help me." or "Be pacific!" or "I like sequents." She meant sequins. I finally gave up after she busted out with, "Oh, you makes me sick tryna be all proper an shit!"
