I fully support gay pride...but there are few things in life I hate more than a parade.
I'll be far, far away from it.

LOL !!! I agree, Last year was my first time & didnt expect it to be so crowded. I've been to NY many times but it's really crowded during Gay Pride. I remember this one guy was dressed up michael jackson or prince couldnt tell though lol

I love both -- if you couldn't tell, their outfit was really, really bad...
I used to go in the '90s with friends.. it was a lot of fun, but, I'm not much of a parade person I never even went to the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade until 2001.. - and that was b/c my job was on Broadway, a block up from Macy's, so we had a prime (and comfy) view Hag. I can't even be bothered to fucks with gay pride anymore. It always falls on my fucking birthday no matter what coast I live on and really its just a meatmarket anymore. Check the local craigslist after any gay pride (or hell, any protest rally down here in SF) and its just like they missed the fucking point.
Not that Harvey Milk didn't expect us to have a bit of fun, but is this really the kind of shit we die for?
Edit: I've been to gay prides in Atlanta, DC, Baltimore, San Francisco, NY, and MPLS. [Edited 4/22/11 12:56pm]

wait.. he was voguing, dressed like MJ and/or Prince? I guess he wanted to represent the Holy Trinity of the '80s..
Hmm.. I also did that Caribbean parade in Brooklyn once, on/near Labor Day in Sept. the food was great - but it also didn't 'move' me so I never went back when we were in college, our male friends never "let" us go with them to this one; they didn't want us "cockblocking" as they tried to pick up girls

I've never been to a Pride event, so I can't judge them. But my assumption that your description is pretty much the case is largely why I've stayed home. [Edited 4/22/11 13:24pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I can't say it wasn't fun the first couple times, though it was pretty overwhelming. There's -SO MANY- people that in the bigger cities it was more a hassle than anything. Eventually you forget everyone is there celebrating equality and it just becomes a bunch of half naked drunk guys standing in your way. lol.
My 2 cents anyway. | |

I agree yeah I feel the same way. The worst part you have to get there EARLY before people start to come out LOL Kinda like the black friday sales....Yeah there are alot of half naked guys ....sometimes naked that get in your way. Im not that bold LOL

I remember THAT being what inspired me to really rethink going. In San Francisco, there are so many people that the bars have 3-4 hour lines sometimes or will be so fucking packed you cannot MOVE inside. And this year, we will be 1 hot spot down as our Eagle is turning into a straight bar (RIP) and not even my friends who work for our other big bar (LoneStar) can drag my ass out in that fucking sweat pit.
And the public transit becomes something akin to a fucking sauna with people in the midst of various phases of intercourse.

LOL !!!! They have this one spot in Manhattan called the pier, In the village.......As soon as everyone left the parade everyone went to the pier....Shit......I never seen so many people looked like a herd of roaches. literally

Oh yeah !!! This is how I'm going to look for pride. The guy on the far left. This will be my first time going to pride dressed like this LOL

Here in Toronto, folk converge on the "gaybourhood," centered at Church and Wellesley streets. Again, I've never been, but I've seen photos -- and it is shoulder-to-shoulder men in various stages of undress. And more recently, the Lesbian community shows up in smaller and smaller numbers, preferring to hold their own events, like the Dyke March, in other parts of the downtown area.
Further eroding Toronto Pride's integrity, I think, is the fact the city this year is withholding funding of events until after they're over. If certain groups -- Gays Against Israeli Apartheid, for example -- show up, event planners will get nothing in reimbursement. I'm not necessarily a supporter of groups like GAII, but I think there's something off when an event began as a show of sociopolitical self-determination allows itself to become beholden to the money of the sociopolitical institutions that have forced its existence in the first place. Hellz yeah! I will be my second time too... Last year was Matinee party at Governor's Island on saturday, Parade, Pier Dance and Alegria on Sunday; stumbling out at 10 monday morning. The flight back to LA on Monday was torture, hell. This year I'm taking an extra day off and fly on Tuesday.

I've done LA Pride for several years and volunteered at several booths, collected signatures and credit card numbers for a local gay teen runaway center. I would then meet a few friends for a few drinks and then head home exhausted and bit annoyed at all the crazy drunk/high queens running around having a blast while I had to work. Thinking to myself or exclaiming, on a very high soapbox, to whoever would listen, how the damn LA gays missed the point. It was making me quite bitter. But, last year, I celebrated NY pride and was blown away. My experience was that you could have both the Pride/Political aspect of it as well as going to all the parties and relaxing the fuck up and just enjoying myself. The middle way, as the Buddhist would say... I'll be in Fire Island til about Thursday then the party begins... Yay! I can't wait. I had one of the best weekends of my life last year. It was that much fun. I laughed so much. I danced so much. I dare say I'm getting mellower in my old age. The angry youth of my past is moving...
My girl Ani Difranco has been singing this new (unreleased) song in her current shows with the line..."If you're not happier as you get older then you're fucking up..." A close friend of mine really wants me to go with him, but I'm more than a little intimidated by what I've heard about that crowd If you will, so will I

you've been to the pier, too? Cool.. you thought that was crowded.. wait 'til Fleet Week next month (this yr, May 25 - June 1)..
Have you been to the Stonewall bar, or LIPS?

we (johnart, his partner & another close friend of ours, and Efan & cborgman) had my birthday dinner there last year.. if you go -- and you're legally old enough to drink -- you must have the Frozen Cosmo ** just remember to eat (they have great food); a couple of those things will have you on your ass (I think I had 5  -- but we ate ...) I even tried to dress more "butchy" than I usually do for that occasion . When some people took photos of me it felt odd. And a famous TV presenter tried to flirt with my then boyfriend, that was fun .
