Learning About Other Cultures Some people think it's odd that i'm really into African American culture and history?, I mean dozens of my favorite artists are black, and all forms of music of the last 100 years have been from African roots. And yeah i liked reading about The Black Panthers, Malcolm X, Martin Luther & Black Cinema. I watched tons of films about black rights and just other regular types of black cinema.
I am really fascinated by Asian culture to, besides the fact i love asians to death and almost every person i have dated has been asian hehe , but the cultures and different types are just interesting to me, i like to learn about what other cultures are into, what the eat, there film, the look's etc.
I find it to be healthy but some people think i'm weird cause i'm a white boy and i don't know should only care about white culture psssh boring zzzzzzz.
Any who anyone else interested in other cultures besides there own? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I am a history buff and in another life was probably an archaeologist.
A few years ago ("few" meaning back in 1996) I was at work reading an Ebony magazine b/c Prince was on the cover. One of my co-workers looked at me and said; "Uhm...do you realize that Ebony is a black magazine?" I asked him if only white people read People or Time. He said it was different.
I am proud of my hispanic heritage, and do enjoy learning about other cultures, societies and civilizations.
Also, it intrigues me to think of America in, say, 1,000 years and how the various areas of the nation will probably be unique "cultures" of their own. One day people in what is now "New England" and people in what is now "the deep south" will probably be distinct culturally and linguistically the way that Spain and France are. The way I see it, we are dropped in a candy store with the blessing of a short lifetime to ransack the place. Only a fool would stand still the entire time and sample merely what's in their immediate reach. And if folk choose to do so, Gunsnhalen, insist they move the hell out of your way. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

LMAO LMAO That is insane right? I couldnt see myself just staying in one area like Long Island and never getting out

Well, whatever you do, don't ask members of those cultures what their culture is about or you are in for a fun ride.
I get what you mean, though. I've taken long periods of time to study various cultures and ways of life, but I don't think I've ever studied just one and been an expert on that. I have a friend who is very into Japan and most east Asian culture, but he knows fuck all about, say, African culture or Caribbean culture, or AfroBrazilian culture, etc. (Just examples because east Asian and African cultures are pretty diametrically opposed, lol.)
I like being well-rounded and still open to learning more.

When I am staying with my bf I am living in a totally different world so to speak. His background and culture is 100% different from mine and I learned a lot not only about a different culture, but also about life in general. With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! I mean, the main reason for even living on this overpriced strip of sand is that we're so close to New York City. To think that a 30 - 45min train ride could get you to the Metropolitan, or to see a Broadway show or even just walk around Times Square or something...when I was in college and we had to go into the city one day, my head spun around Linda-Blair-style when a bunch of my fellow classmates didn't even know how to take the train into NYC!!! Yeah, a certain informed groundedness and simplicity has merits, I think. But even that is best appreciated with some cursory knowledge of life beyond that box. Context illuminates. An altogether wilfully ignorant eschewal of the world, though, just seems so unfortunate to me. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I have friends like that, not same scenario as yours, but the same in a sense that they're more comfortable with their own surroundings not to be bothered by outside ones.
I think its fear rather than some put on indifference.

I hate watching those videos of people failing to point to where obvious things on a map are. Or when people refer to Africa as a country, or when people don't know the relationship between New Zealand and Australia (geographically). I think to myself that these are not dumb people, rather they are victims of our culture that is obsessed with consumption (of things, not tuberculosis).
They've chosen to relinquish their responsibility to learn about this world around us (and likely weren't taught to find that to be important anyway) and have allowed their knowledge of the world to be replaced by whatever psychological junk food is relative to them.
This is akin to someone in America not being able to manage English conjugation (which is one of the simplest forms of it in the world). I get nauseated when I see someone mistake "you're" for "your" etc.

I've been surrounded by various ethnic/cultural/religious groups all my life, and still live around it today. I too feel like I was an anthropologist/archaelogist in another life. I remember when I was a kid that's what I wanted to be, but life didn't turn out that way, so I indulge myself in knowledge about the human species, human behavior, genetics, etc. I've always had an interest in Ancient Africans and Egyptians/Native American/Caribbean history/culture, and took a few college courses in some of them. In my very young years, Margaret Mead was my favorite cultural anthropologist, and in my later college years, I did a paper on her research of a specific African, ethnic group. Interesting topics, and one has to approach the study of various cultural/ethnic groups, with a matter of respect, and without prejudices, based on their own culture(s). Good luck with your research and interest. It will serve you well. [Edited 4/22/11 14:19pm]
