25 Th Hour ...really I could not stay awake at that film...25th hour was really long and drawn out...it had too much going on in one film to make it very inttresting; and when something did indeed happen it went by quickly and followed with more slow buildup. I actually liked SHe Hate Me though...it got bad ratings but I thought it was a finny and wise film.

ANYWAY

Cant wait to see the movie version of Madea Big Happy Family..hope its good...i know it will not be as forward as the play though..they never are...its like comparing a book to a movie.

I love the play "Madea's Family Reunion" but didn't like the movie at all. The play had a lot more of Madea in it but the movie focused more on the other characters and didn't have near as much Madea in it. She was also tamer in the movie than she was in the play. In the play, she shoots at the neighbor's dog which was a funny scene. I guess they couldn't do it in the movie though for all the "animal rights" lovers. lol But the movie didn't even seem to have the same storyline as the play at all. They were totally different.

Also, the play had some great gospel music. I'm not even into gospel music but those heffers were doing a great job belting out those gospel tunes. I was actually enjoying the songs rather than fast forwarding through the tape like I usually do when a song comes on. In the movie though, they had to sell out and use that damn god awful neo stool music that's depressing as hell. I saw the movie on TV so I couldn't fast forward through that shit. lol Plus he had to go get the biggest name actors he could find. Hell, use your play cast. They could use some exposure and fame rather than these huge established actors that he cast in the movies. It just seems like he sold out when he started doing the movies.

My sister loves the hell out of him though. She loves everything he's ever done. He's to her like Prince is to a lot of folks on this site. I only care for the stuff with the character Madea in it though. I've seen a little of his other stuff but the character Madea is the only stuff that I care for because she's so damn crazy.

Family REunion play was indeed different than the film...they just about always are alot dofferent. However I Can Do Bad All By Myself was alot more intresting on film than on the play version..the jokes were funnier and it got to the point quicker...Taraji did a great job in the movie too.

The plays are just about different films altogether when compared to the movie versions. Im pretty sure the new one will be drastically different too. I dont know why people sit and complain about the films, but never even seen any of the plays.

I do get tired after the first time of watching the gospel songs on the play...but they are outstanding and the singers are awesome. Madea is funny as hell..she puts a bit of comedy on some very dramatic and real honest situations and sets the characters back into reality instead of their fantasy worlds.

I like how everyone comes to her for their advice on how to live life on the right track...even though Madea will be the first one to bring her gun to church lol.

The one thing I give Perry credit for is putting Black actors to work, especially Black actors that we've never seen and sme that were pretty much all forgotten about. Interestingly enough, Spike was responsible for the same thing when he first came out, and Spike should at least acknowledge that about Perry, whether he likes his films or not.

I think Spike lee has a very valid point. Tyler Perry needs to step up his game if he ever wants to be considered a serious film maker. He needs to kill off that ridiculous Madea character. The character isn't funny at all. I think he often starts his movie ideas with good intent....but the Madea character distracts from the message of his movies. His movies and Tv show do have a lot of minstrel like characters in them sad . Its time for him to grow as a film maker. He can learn from Spikes the mistakes that Spike made early in his career. We all know spike had some fuck up movies his self. Not all of his work is a masterpiece either.

OMG you got bored with 25th hour? There was great interaction between the characters and I loved how the history of Edward's character plays out from his friendships to his girlfriend to his father preparing him for departure - introspection meets spiritual journey. Films like 25th Hour and She Hate Me as well as Miracle at St. Anna show Spike's range as a director/writer and I think that's where he tops Tyler by leaps and bounds.

She Hate Me was brilliant - made me wish I was a pimp.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

I don't know about you, but if your films have grossed over 500 million dollars, then yo ass IS definitely a "serious filmmaker". Just because he doesn't do films you or some others may not like doesn't mean he's NOT a serious filmmaker.

All of the "jackass" movies have grossed over 300 million. So what's your point? Are they serious film makers? Tyler Perry movies are half movie and half minstrel show.

I think he is a serious film maker. If he would lose the buffonary type characters from his movies. They would be good. He would probably win some awards. Since he is always crying about not winning any. Besides being a Black person...there are enough negative sterotypes of us in the media...we don't need more negative stereotypes...that's all I'm saying.

I give Spike lee the credit for speaking out. Most people in the media would never criticize Tyler Perry publicly. People expect all black people to like his movies. we don't....and that's okay. You can be black....and be an individual..with your own opinion. My self I think I only liked 2 of spikes movies. One being "Get on the Bus" the other one was "Malcom X". I have also liked some of his documentaries. I thought some of his other flicks like "Do the Right thing" and "Jungle Fever" were wack. In Jungle Fever he obvious expressed his own views against mixed dating. I didn't think it was his place to put his person views in the movie....by hiding them behind characters.

Thank you for replying, I tried searching for something that link the two, and this is the only thing I could find:

She didn't criticizes him in this clip, however she took it home.

I say this much, I would NEVER want to get into a war of words with Dr. bell hooks, even if I strongly disagree with her on anything! I put her in the same category as Paul Mooney, Minister Louis Farakhan, & Andrew Dice Clay as someone that I strong advised other people to don't f*** with. Plain and simple.

Spike himself admitted that his first film She Got To Have It was THE worst film of his career as a filmmaker. The acting was awesomely bad.

In my opinion, I'm like his first film better than Girl 6. But that's just me of course. wink

Yeah you and Gray cap are right....but I just think you should be able to date or marry who ever you want. I think that is kind of a racist view. I don't care if some one is Black or White saying it. I get tired of people getting on black men who date white women. Black women should be able to date who ever they want. They should open the mind and get out of a box. Even though I have seen a lot more Black women dating white men and other ethnicities.

spit disbelief lol

Shirley is a while man named Chuck Knupp with blackface & drag. No one care about his kind of entertainment except for other drag queens (I think!) .

Madea is the alter-ego/character created by a black man named Tyler Perry. His fanbase is a lot bigger with black AND white folks alike.

I don't think Spike's message was that. I think all he did was show just how hard it is, as well as show some of the pre-conceived notions - right or wrong - races have of each other.

Of course the interracial romance in Jungle Fever was wrong because it was also an act of adultery. Therefore, I atrongly agree with you that Spike was NOT being fair about the subject of interracial dating at all.

I'm sorry. But I am compelled to say this.

Spike Lee, a man over 50 years of age, does arguably as much to embarrass Black America on Turner Networks as Tyler Perry could. Anyone who has seen him decked head to toe in Knicks gear at any given NBA game on TNT, goinf through all those histrionics, can attest to that.

You can't preach dignity from an artistic standpoint and compromise it from a personal standpoint.

Spike Lee is an elite filmmaker. His body of work takes a back seat to no one. But however valid his criticisms of Tyler Perry (which is a bit like Christopher Nolan going in on Judd Apatow), he really needs to look at his own public image before he questions Perry's movie imagery.

THAT being said, Tyler Perry is not seriously comparing his own TV shows to Seinfeld or The Sopranos. Presuming he's right about the lack of complaints about those shows (and he's not), maybe that's because they were actually . . . good shows.

Again, not talking about his movies (another gray wig altogether) but his TV shows.

I disagree. The script of Jungle Fever -- a good movie -- dripped with disdain over the black male-white female relationship in ANY context (adulterous or otherwise). Even the title dehumanized that brother-with-a-white-girl thing. It may have been the reason the ending was so bizarre.

But, the black woman-white man angle was far better and had far more heart, and that gets overlooked.

Why would somebody criticize Seinfeld? That was a funny show. They didn't speak in broken english and act ignorant. Sopranos was criticized by the Italian community. So I don't know why he compared himself to them. Even some of the black sitcoms of the 1970's had some sterotypes....but they weren't as blatantly ignorant and buffonish as Madea or that dumb character on his tv show. At least George Jefferson had confidence and style. lol Besides he was a successful dry cleaner who ran his own business.

Norman Lear was brilliant at making lovable stereotypes. The Bunkers were just as "broad" as the Jeffersons or Evanses.
