Slang from when you were young

With my 20th reunion swiftly approaching I've been thinking about slang terms I used to use when I was kid. I want to compile a list and use it in an invitation for an event I'm planning the week of the reunion. So gimme your best slang that takes you back. cool

Some of my faves are:

Like a mug

Cold fresh

Servin' nem nuce

Illin'

Wack

Cold chillin'

Unhappily built

I remember in my school kids used to sing, " If yo breathe ain't fresh, you need a WINTERFRESH !!!" or something like that. Gosh it was funny back then, but now I'm like rolleyes ...Oh yeah and "Word!" lol

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead.
Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow.
Do not walk beside me, either. Just leave me the hell alone rolleyes

I'm from the Northeast so we may have had different terms. I only recognize Like a mug, Wack and illin from yours.

When something was great/awesome when we were younger we said it was "pissa". (In Boston we said specifically said "wicked pissa")

Like - "Man did you see Jaws yet"?

"Yeah I saw it this weekend it was wicked pissa"!!!!

Something tells me that's not going to make your list..... smile

nod

My street only had one Panamanian family... and those kids NEVA went outside with us hoodrats.

Those two little girls only made cameo appearances from the front door to the car and back! They would have been dubbed -itos too! lol

Those dudes are STILL called by their nicknames as well... disbelief

Buckled, sussed and cramped. Said at the same time as you wave your hand about making your fingers slap together. lol

Also, when someone smelt a fart they would declare 'Peanut Slug Eric' and put their fist on their chin. Which meant that they didn't do it.

And if we were playing 'It' or '40-40' we would cross our fingers and say 'Exceees' which meant that we were exempt from being caught.

Kind of on the same subject... we'd have a saying for when we'd raced to do something - 'First the worst, second the best, third the one with the hairy chest' I can remember being third at something and crying because I didn't want to have a hairy chest.

I taught my kids that one recently and I'm always 3rd the one with the hairy chest. neutral

I always thought these were stupid, but my friends used to say:

"that's humor!!" or "humor dude!" if something was funny

"Q!!!!" or "You're on Q!!!!" meant you just got put back in your place with a witty comeback. Never quite understood that.

these ones I did not mind so much:

A "dud" was a bad joke

"Chalk it up" meant you just scored another dud

I remember the word "trendy" used to be thrown around in advertising in the 80s (much like the word EXTREME has been misused in the noughties) for some reason we started spelling it trendii (maybe thanks to Danii Minogue's name change? hmmm ) and pronouncing it tren-dye falloff falloff

We also used to say ace, bulk, chonks

lol

Bulldog

Valspeak is often spoken with a heavy accent sometimes associated with Californians. Words are spoken with high variation in pitch combined with very open or nasal vowel sounds.

Examples:

  • Like - Used as an interjection: "That was, like, the worst thing ever!" or to indicate speech: "And she was like 'Get out of my way!'"
  • As if – lit. "yeah, right" or "as if" except it does not use a subject; expresses disbelief.
  • Bitchin' - adj. slang for excellent; first-rate. Though a derivative of "bitch", bitchin' is sometimes not considered profane.
  • Whatever! - short for "whatever you say"; sarcastic interjection often emphasizing the final syllable.
  • Fer shur – lit. "For sure", often used in agreement.
  • Totally – "I agree" or "completely."
  • Oh my God – can be used many ways; expresses shock.
  • Tre - A synonym for "very" (derived from French "très")
  • So - Very; used frequently and said with strong emphasis.
  • Seriously - Frequent interjection of approval.
  • Gnarly - expression of seriousness. can be a word for very intense or very pleasing
  • Are you serious?- expression of surprise.
