Shudda never did it...lawd JESUS I was hoodwinked! I was young, 18..didnt know what I was getting into..but you know they say everything happens for a reason.. it has upped my pay having a degree and all...but dammit if those payments kill the things I wish I could have right now. I just finished my program 2 weeks ago, but I didn't apply for deferment for the last semester. Luckily I did a CitiAssist loan through the bank, so I've been paying the interest all along. I've just started paying the principle back...

Sending feelings of sympathy here - I can totally relate as I'm just finishing a Master's in Boston. I don't know if this is any consolation, but I personally wish I could have taken a loan in a US bank [not allowed since I'm not a US citizen, as well as in my home country, because there, they require a proof of income ]
Life's tough these days... but as I tell all those around me who said I should have bought a house/apartment instead: it's better to invest in one's brains than bricks!
The best fruit are reaped in the long-term, just be patient&persistent!

$24,000...That really sucks...I'm in a similar situation now...I do have a scholarship that pays half of my tuition but the rest is paid by students loans + my monthly paycheck. I'm working 24 hours a week to help pay the tuition with 18 credits...I always wish we had more than 24 hours a day...haha XP I'm an international student so tuition fees are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. And for international students, the interest rate for Students Loan is higher (the interest depends on where my parents are from...isn't that a little ridiculous? The fact that my parents are from a poor country definitely didn't help.) Personally though...when I think about some friends back home...It just always reminds me that I'm so freaking lucky to even be in college in America, studying what I want...I should probably be thankful everyday... So I guess what I'm trying to say is...we gotta....suck it up...and...work harder...eat less...sleep less...and we'll...get there!!! Sorry I suck at giving advices DX But good luck...!!

Baby Be Mine best alarm song? I gotta do that! Currently it's "Hanging On A String (Contemplating)" by Loose Ends
Back to the topic, yeah im sitting at about 20,000 actually..I had it deferred a couple times in the past when I had sucky jobs. Since youre an international student you probably appreciate it more than I do....in America it just feels like it is something you are forced to do as soon as you get out of high school. Did somebody hold a gun to your head and force you to borrow that money? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Hell, I'd never be able to pay that back. That's one of the reasons why I never went to college. Of course I'll probably be stuck here in Mississippi for the rest of my life because of it. Andy is a four letter word.

I don't understand the point of that comment.
I can't speak for the others, but for me: I had an opportunity to pursue a dream, so I did what I needed to make it happen. Times will be rough for a little while, but I'll manage. No, no one held a gun to MY head, but I felt it was my only option.
Sometimes people just want to share their feelings/thoughts. When you were anxious/nervous about your last play, no one came on and put you down by saying, "No one is forcing you out on that stage."

You can deduct student loan interest on your taxes, though! That helps a little...
Well - I'll just say that it feels great when you get that sucker paid off! For me, student loans were necessary and receiving an education was important, so well worth it.

I paid my undergrad loan off in a little over half the time by doubling the payments (I lived home then). I was able to pay for my Masters program out-of-pocket. This last set, however...
Like I said, I'll manage... And good luck to the rest of you as well... "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I wasn't talking to you. I was replying to the OP - who called her loans "hell on earth" and asked why they "can't just go away."
And I'm 99.9% sure I didn't say anything about my last play, since I was told in no uncertain terms that nobody gave a shit about it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It doesn't matter if you were speaking DIRECTLY to me. I thought the comment was unnecessary.
Okay, not your LAST play. But I do remember you posting about A PLAY, and congratulating you on it. I'm sorry someone said that to you. Then you should know how it feels when you get shot down for sharing your feelings. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I wish mine were only $200 for 10 years!
Are they Federal loans (subsidized or unsubsidized) or private loans? If they're the former, find out what the interest rate is. Contact your lender and see if they could consolidate them and perhaps lock in a lower interest rate. I did that immediately upon graduation and my interest rate will never go up, regardless of what the prime is. Right now, it's higher than my private loan, but over the long run (e.g. when interest rates rise) it's going to save me money. Plus I've already paid off the interest so my payments go towards principal now.
If you're genuinely having trouble making payments and they're Federal loans, you could apply for an economic hardship deferrment (where you don't make any payments for a period -- like 12 months or so) or a forbearance (pay smaller payments or spread out the payment over a longer repayment period). Contact your lender or visit their website to find out the requirements and see if you qualify.
As others have mentioned, you can also deduct the interest paid (up to $2500) on your Federal taxes. Make sure you do that!
Finally, if you work in the non profit sector, or certain fields for a set number of years you may be able to get a portion of your student loan debt forgiven. (http://www.finaid.org/loans/forgiveness.phtml or Google "Student Loan forgiveness programs")
Whatever you do, do not stop making payments. If you're having trouble, call your lender and try to work out an alternative payment plan with them. Paying the loans back may be a pain in the ass, but you do not want to default and paying them on time every month will help you get a great credit rating, which is important down the road.

So...if you're not going to join the pity party, you can't express an opinion?
I just loooooooooove the double standard around here. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Keep your head up bro. Be glad you got that money in the first place. There are thousands of people who would love to get a loan and pay it back one day. Don't know how you usually handle your bills but I had to pay back approximately 13.000 US dollars and I paid it all back at once, which saved me a lot of money ( and interest) and made me feel better and lighter. I hate paying off debts or living in debts so I always make sure to pay back as soon as possible. It's going to be tough but just do it, work as hard as you can and you'll feel much better once you've gotten rid of that weight on your shoulders.
