The whole issue is complicated here in Thailand. It's not as black and white as a girl standing on a corner. Anyway, I had a good friend who was basically a prostitute, and we put her up for a few months while she went back to study for what I guess would be the equivalent of a high school diploma. Thanks for sharing. Her story shows she wasn't in prostitution because she liked it so much. She was surviving and had no other means than her body.

The same goes for the majority of prostitutes in the U.S. and Europe. It's not a matter of 'they could get a different job if they wanted to'. They oftentimes have been victims of incest or other types of sexual abuse; they re-enact their abuse. They just don't know anything else.

She spent her time either going out partying or waitressing in bars for very little money. She was looking for 'Mr. Right' initially, but I think after a while she was ready to settle for anyone that could provide for her and take her away from her struggling life to something better. I think she just fell into it as guys would pay afterwards for one-night stand type situations, and she needed the money. She was looking for something, not specifically just getting money from sex, but for a dependable guy, for a better life, and her means to do this was to go out and hook up with guys and hope for something lasting, but it seems it didn't usually work out that way. She obviously saw in the meantime she could make more even if it turned out to be a one-night stand than she could waitressing. I remember she was happy when sometimes she could get a 'boyfriend' for a few months at a time, who provided for her, but as those relationships never lasted she'd always have to start the cycle all over again. I think ultimately she realised she wasn't going to find what she was looking for that way and decided to make a break from that life and knuckle down and take better care of herself, even if it meant having very little. As if by magic, a friend who'd always just kinda been around, keeping an eye on her and making sure she was alright, turned out to be Mr. Right. She's the same bubbly person she always was, but it's not forced. There's not that sadness and weariness behind it all, she's just all fresh and rejuvinated. It's wonderful to see.
