Only a few emoticons look serious. Even a couch can be funny. So I think it counts, but my expectations are realistic. It's like swearing... You may not swear yourself, but it's not like you need to stop people from doing something that just ponctuates their everyday language. It's part of the language.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask XxAxX to leave. It's not that she posted emoticons. It's that the idea of posting them was funny. Big difference.

Again, there's nothing wrong with humor itself. This thread just isn't the place to joke.

The winky is probably the most insidiously humorous emoticon with perhaps the smiley. They look cute but it basically means "This isn't serious. I'm kidding."

But as I said, one must be tolerant. I'm not about to start an emoticon jar like Prince would.

The correct fucking way to spell the word is "humour" - H-U-M-O-U-R. Spelling mistakes are NOT funny, and no one here thinks it is very big or clever.

It's humor, according to Dictionary.com.

hu·mor ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hymr)
n.
The quality that makes something laughable or amusing; funniness: could not see the humor of the situation.
That which is intended to induce laughter or amusement: a writer skilled at crafting humor.
The ability to perceive, enjoy, or express what is amusing, comical, incongruous, or absurd. See Synonyms at wit1.

And you trust a stupid American Dictionary website for your spelling requirements? That is not fucking funny. Not one little bit! I'm not even smirking, and I'm known for my smirking, I'll have you know!

You know, in Canada we can spell it both ways. If you're loyal to the Queen's English (or French), you use "humour". It you're heavily americanized, you use "humor".

I think it's important to be tolerant of other spellings.

The American spelling of humour (humor) originated from a trend in the English language of the time of the American pioneers (who were mostly English or Irish) to be "less French". The thinking at the time was that dropping the "u" in words such as colour or humour or vigour made it more English, in fact.

Now I know you were kidding, Ian...I just thought I'd mention this for added interest and to annoy you even more.

I do hope you are not trying to be funny here, because that would violate the terms and conditions of this thread. This is a very serious matter and we shouldn't tolerate levity!

Americanised English is incorrect English. If you are going to try and speak English, at least have the decency to do it correctly. That said, there is nothing wrong with tolerating people who misspell things - but I believe it is better to tolerate but also to help... by explaining the fatal spelling error to the poor miscreant in question.

Look! A blatant use of a smiley emoticon, without any disregard for his personal safety! I'm sure this has violated Aerogram's thread rules. I demand immediate and swift action!

PS I'd like to point out that my excessive use of exclamation marks is to effectively communicate the true gravity of the issue, and does not represent any attempt at jest.

I'm not prepared to discuss the matter further whilst your blatant smiley usage goes unpunished. Frankly, I'm shocked and appalled. When I was a lad, we didn't have such fancy notions like "humour" and "laughter" and "fun". We made do with walking to school barefoot and eating handfuls of hot gravel!

Your spelling is somewhat humourous also: "terible"? I've half a mind to invite Nep back onto the site for a day to sort out you ill-kempt youngsters and your appalling spelling!

I was in no way trying to be funny. In my country, you can choose between the two, and we don't need to call ourselves the Land of the free.
