Who's been to Denver?

Will be there later this week. I know I'll be hitting the museum and Botanical Garden. Anything else I should be sure to check out?

You could check out LoDo. (Lower Downtown) It has shopping, drinking, historic buildings. Fun place to hang out!

I worked in Denver for a few months (about 10 years ago, so things may not be quite what they were then) and here's a few of my highlights:

Dinosaur Ridge is worth a look. It's not massively touristy, but it it's just outside Lakewood - so not too far west of Denver. It's mainly just some dinosaur footprints on a ridge of rock (or it was when I was there, by the looks of the website things have got a little bit more touristy since then). Definitely worth a look though. There was something immensely enjoyable about wandering around looking at and touching actual dinosaur footprints on a ridge of rock.

Lookout Mountain - Buffalo Bill's grave is at the top (along with the inevitable but actually quite interesting museum and gift shop). The views are stunning (on a good day).

And when you come back down the mountain you could visit The Fort for some food. I recommend the elk.

^ Those are sort of outside Denver itself, but seeing as Denver's pretty big anyway, you can plan on doing lots of travelling. If you're going to be car-less and reliant on Denver's shall we say quirky public transport options, then you can more or less forget about all of the above.

Anyway, LoDo, as previously mentioned, is where it's at, apparently.

I went to loads of places, and obviously drank far too much of too many of the delicious local brews, because I can't remember the names of most of them.

I do remember The Church though - a nightclub, which even if you're not into clubbing is worth a look. It is (the clue is in the name) a converted church, and one of the best uses for one I've ever encountered.

The Avenue Grill is an excellent non-chain restaurant - a bit pricey but well worth it.

If you're into seafood The Fresh Fish Company is worth checking out.

There was a brilliant sushi restaurant in LoDo too, but I can't remember what it was called.

You could also visit one of the last remaining real book shops in the world - The Tattered Cover.

Eh, I'm sure there's more but my memory fails me, and I've run out of time.

I should also mention that the people of Denver and environs I found to be among the friendliest I've met.

Enjoy your visit!

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
