Anyone on the org own chickens ?

Just curious . You know the kind that lay eggs .

Alright , before you all get goin with the jokes ... I just have been alil amazed at how many of my environmentally conscious friends on facebook seem to be into the "chickens" for egg-laying and such .... was just researching what you need to keep some chickens and thought I would put it out there ...

I might be surprised by what I find on the org (I always am ...)

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

I grew up with a chicken or two... we would raise them for meat same as the rabbits. They laid eggs but mom would kill them after a while...

did I also mention that I grew up in a rented apartment in a large city. Folks made fun of us... we also kept a seagull in the bathtub for two years until its wing healed.

I have never raised chickens but my grandparents did. The chickens were cool but the rooster was mean as hell. He would chase us & peck at our heals, then, he was dinner.

I was surprised to find there's a big underground chicken-owning community in Toronto, and they've been lobbying to get laws changed here to make chicken-keeping legal.

Roosters, however, would be persona (or rather avis geek) non grata. They're just way too loud and aggressive.

No, but I've sold some before. Got $200,000 for three of them one year. Usually get about $1.5 million for 200 pens of chickens and 100 turkeys.

Yep. Got $175,000 for a turkey. It's for charity. Some money goes to the kid that raised the animal, but most goes to fund scholarships.

Me and my committee have raised more than $20 million over the last 25 years. Our whole organization has raised more than $250 million.

It's the "Rodeo" in my ID!

Here are the sales figures on my particular committee (one of them, any way. I'm on four committees):

Thanks! We have great concerts, too. Janet Jackson played the Rodeo this year.

We tried to get Prince (my idea!). We asked, and we got (and I quote) "the quickest NO from anyone we ever asked".

Meh, I chalk it up to misinformation. For instance, even though I have it on very good authority that Prince owns (or owned) a ranch not far from here and grows hay, I doubt he knows that our organization is actually dedicated to education more than anything else. He probably thinks we're all about eating beef or riding bulls. Sure, that's part of a rodeo, but the reason we have a rodeo is to raise money so kids can go to college.

Same with Bruce Springsteen (another guy I tried to get us to hire). His manager said Bruce would not play us, that he would never ever play a fair. Although we are technically a "fair", we're about as far from your county fair as you could possibly imagine.

He probably had a "Rolling Stones" flashback. lol

But it's too bad, really. He could have played his country hit, "The One You Wanna C."

I grew up on a farm. We had a small chook house and fed them pellets and leftover food scraps.

We also had a small water tank that collected rain water off the roof of their house and hooked up a small circular drinking trough. During the day we opened up the door and let them roam around the property.

And here's the cool bit...

I'd read that earthworms come to the surface after it has rained and a loud noise sends vibrations through the ground. Well I'm a drummer and my brother's a bassist and if we were jamming after some rain, sure enough the chooks would be hanging around outside the room, appreciating the extra feed.

cool

And poo everywhere.

And we don't have a farm or even a patch of grass, just a small concrete yard.

A small concrete yard now no longer covered in poo.

You aren't kidding! I always try to buy locally produced eggs at my farmers' market. The color of the yolks is always spectacular - none of that pale yellow you see in supermarket eggs.

I made some vanilla ice cream once that was practically orange - simply because the eggs were so good. lol
