so let me phrase that question as nuanced and diplomatic as possible...
why on earth would someone want to move from miserable UK to miserable US? seriously?

I am happy for you .
Visas are one of the worst things that were ever invented. Without them my whole life would be so much happier, cheaper and less stressfull . With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Oregon.
MrSmoketoomuch - I've NEVER found the US to be anywhere NEAR as miserable as England. People are generally much friendlier, there's more stuff going on, living costs are cheaper and it's generally just way more fun. The ONLY place in the UK I can tolerate living is London... and it's like, 3x more expensive to live in London than anywhere else.
Anyway, thanks everyone! Serious - I so agree. If it weren't for visas I would have moved there years ago! |

Looks like you will be able to make some of those Prince shows in LA.
See you at the shows. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Again hearing this brought this up:
"What makes UK people want to move to the US, what makes US people want to move to the UK."
It's strange, we all think our neighbors on the other side of the Atlantic are nicer than where we live at.
Anyways, welcome to America.

Totally agree with you about England in general. Nice people, interesting country, but definitely not the kind of country I want to live in except for London, and that city is waaaaaaay too expensive. Why pay so much for living there when you might as well have a much better standard of living elsewhere? But....what about Brighton? Don´t you like Brighton? Or is that too small for you? I really like Brighton even though it has more of a village feel to it.
I agree with most of the things you said about the USA...I find people there much more generous, laid back and friendlier than people in Germany or England. Then again, there are nice people and assholes everywhere. The cost of living is also much cheaper in the USA, you´re right about that. Funny how everybody in the rest of the world, in rich countries and in poor countries, wants to move to England, yet most English people I know either already live outside England or are planning to leave it.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I'm really looking forward to this new chapter in my life
kewlschool - don't think I'm gonna be around in time to catch a Prince show unless he's still doing shows in July which is when I'm planning a road trip to LA - but it's statistically more likely that I'll see Prince more often once I've moved! |

wow, i didn't realize that the uk was one of those places that the u.s. required a visa from. middle east, yeah, uk, not so much.
i've been to portland. very pretty, and green, and wet. except for the expense, you'll feel right at home!
here in l.a., we joke that santa monica is little london since brits (and others from the commonwealth) tend to gravitate there. last november, i went to a pub where a beatles tribute band plays most days of the week. i think the one concession they've made is that the beer is cold!
down the street, there are two more pubs and a store that carries uk products.

Question, BTW: Do you have the visa in hand? Because if you don't, realize you may not be getting it anytime soon in the wake of our federal government shutdown. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Now, that would be a bummer.

The guy said it would be couriered to me in 7-10 days, but because of the government shut down it's possible that might increase to 10-14 days but no longer than that. He said it only might be an issue if I was planning to travel in April, but I ain't headed out till June anyway. |

. I've read Portland, OR. has tons of options for Vegans/Vegetarians, so you won't have any problem as far as eating out. When you go to L.A. make sure you check out all the options here on www.quarrygirl.com . I believe the blogger is orignally from the U.K. as well. L.A. btw has the largest expatriots outside the U.K.
