I have a Sharper Image Futuro 3 cd stereo, with Mission 202 speakers. I have a 27" Sony trinitron, and a sony dvd player...

It suffices for a woman's taste.

As for the BMW, the front speakers might be stock, but the previous owner told me he replaced the rear speakers with (obviously cheap) aftermarket replacements. I also removed the factory radio (the display and tape deck were broken) and installed an Aiwa CD player with a line-in jack on the front that accepts a standard stereo 1/8" patch cord, so I can run just about any audio source through it.

The sound in the BMW is pretty lousy. but it's a 16-year-old car and I have no interest in putting a lot of money into it... it's just my transportation when the Miata is tucked away in the garage for the winter.

Okay, so my curiosity got the better of me, and I pulled out the BMW's rear speakers. I guess the previous owner used factory speakers when he replaced them, but: 1) they're surpisingly low quality; and 2) one of them was blown. So I spent $40 on a pair of Pioneer speakers and installed them. Much better... the sound is no longer "lousy."

Excellent!

I had a BMW 528i and the stereo was the upgraded unit... it still sucked. I replaced the speakers and put subs in. As you know BMW stereos have NO bass.

After looking at the speakers I removed, I'm amazed that BMW uses such junk for their audio systems--or at least they did back in 1987. I bought the BMW because it's generally a well-engineered car that was built to last, but the stock audio system was not what I expect from BMW, quality-wise.

I can do without subwoofers, but I mostly listen to dance music, so I require some bass. Before I replaced the rear speakers, I couldn't listen to DJ Rap's Learning Curve at anything more than medium volume without the bass sounding distorted. Now I can crank it up without any problems.

BTW, the previous owner thought the factory radio was great because it could receive the weather band. Woo-hoo.

Bose speakers do NOT reproduce sound properly and their response is NOT flat. Their speakers color the sound and this is not desirable. Bose speakers have a horrible, tinny sound and they are not able to reproduce music or movie soundtracks accurately.

Have you ever noticed that Bose will absolutely NOT post specifications or frequency analysis for their speakers? This is because their speakers are not good. They are made cheaply and out of cheap materials.

What Bose does right is marketing... and that is all they do right.

HERE IS AN EXCERPT FROM A REVIEW OF BOSE ACOUSTIMASS SPEAKERS:

FREQUENCY RESPONSE:

ABOVE: Data gathered by S&V from an anechoic frequency sweep test of the Acoustimass-15 unit. Remember that the goal here is linear response. You want a frequency chart to show as flat a line as possible, which illustrates accurate, linear sound reproduction without colorization. It is true that sound is perceived logarithmically by the human ear, but this should have no influence on a speaker's design because a speaker should faithfully reproduce what the microphones captured when they recorded the source material you are listening to. Notice the high end roll-off at sub-20kHz frequencies at the far right and the extreme colorization from 1 kHz to 20kHz with HUGE emphasis on 5 - 7kHz. There is also a frequency dip between 200 Hz - 300Hz within 3dB. The deep bass rolls off prematurely at around 50Hz and is spiked with colorization at about 200Hz. The bass module and satellites don't even begin to harmonize until beyond -10dB. Remember the representation of accurate sound reproduction on the above graph would be a flat line across the 0dB mark. Just look how miserably Bose stacks up in that regard...

BELOW: Another thing to consider is that the only relevant information on the frequency sweep graph are the measurements between -3dB to +3dB as I've isolated below. This is how the AcoustiMass looks from that standpoint...

This six-speaker unit costs $1299.99 USD MSRP. From dissecting it, I can tell you it costs $100, no more than $150 tops, to assemble. It performs similarly to a $500 Optimus-Radio Shack surround sound system and is very easily outperformed by a $350 Cambridge Soundworks system. For $1300, there are at least three dozen other configurations from companies such as KEF, PSB, NHT, Mission, Tannoy, Diva, Polk, B&W, Energy, Paradigm, M&K, Infinity, Mirage, Monitor, Jamo, Axiom, nOrh, Dahlquist, Sound Dynamics, Acoustic Research, Phase Technology, Definitive Technology, Wharfdale, Boston Acoustics, and Klipsch that easily outperform all Bose speakers from the 151s to the 901s. If you are in the market for such a surround sound system, I have compiled an extensive list of speaker systems for you to peruse. Just click here. Bose equipment, even the flagship LifeStyle 50, resembles the sonic performance of the 11-year-old Aiwa minisystem in my garage. For $500, the Wave Radio is an overpriced alarm clock. If you're impressed by it, have a listen to a Henry Kloss radio for a fraction of the price! For $1000, the Bose 3-2-1 can not be described as anything less than a crime against sound reproduction. The message I want everyone to take from this lengthy review is that Bose, like Bang & Olufsen and Nakamichi, sell lifestyle and designer products whose prices are very heavily saturated by image and appeal. They are by no means performance products. They have no cost-effectiveness, no bang-for-the-buck value, and draw no respect from any audio enthusiests. If your goal is to appeal to and impress housewives, then this system gets the job done, but if your goal is high fidelity, high performance, high endurance, upgradeability, and fair market value pricing then I would very highly suggest you look elsewhere.
