I have a metric ton of... ...WASPS in my backyard.
Anybody know what you can do to get rid of them before they start making nests?

Wasps freak me out. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

How would you weigh a wasp, anyway...? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Nah. I'm not a pic posting kind of Orger. Just imagine hundreds of these flying around in the sun in your backyard, landing on everything, then taking off again....

I use wasp traps on our deck ( they work )
I have noticed here and early "comming out " of wasps and there have been MANY inside the house the past 2 weeks too ...

Bel een imker in de buurt. Vraag of hij ze weg haalt of je doorverwijst. Niet zelf gaan doen. Is echt niet handig.... 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Is that Dutch? .... German. I wanted to translate it and respond in your language but this is as close as I could get...
An imker in the neighborhood ring. Ask or gets he she away or refer you. Self will not do. Is really not skilfully
Obviously that won't work.

Thanks. If they don't thin out soon I think I'll give that a shot. I don't want them to disappear, and I really don't want all the bees gone because I love watching them fly around the garden. There's always a few of them in the Spring/Summer, but there are just WAY, WAAAAAY too many right now. Kinda skurry.

Nah, its a paper wasp. But I think I linked to the wrong one. Mine don't have quite as much color as that one. They look more like the ones below, and they build nests like that, too. Whatever, all I know is that for three days there was a ton of them. Way more than in the last ten years or so. Then today the temp dropped back down into the 60s and they completely disappeared.

I am not an expert but I think Wasps swarm like Bees in certain heat temperatures? I can ask my older brother if you like, he is a Bee Keeper (Honey is now a great money maker lol!!)

Sure. Knowledge is always good.
I would love to try and keep some honey bees just because they're disappearing (and I love honey! we had a family hippie friend who made his own I was a kid - so good!). Unfortunately I'm deathly allergic to their stings. So no honey bees for Cerebus.

Hi Cerebus.
I spoke to my Brother and basically he said that as far as he knows Wasps don't "Swarm" in the same sense of Bee's.
Basically when Bee's Swarm, it is because their current Colony has become too large and a portion of the Bee's up and move with a new Queen to start a new Colony somewhere else. They do this in a "Swarm".
So the swarm you saw was a large collection of wasps in the same place at the same time (My Brother said there may even have been more than one Species of Wasp in the Swarm you saw).
I know this is a UK site, but have a look here some information you may like:
