So my wife is now into these ghost hunting shows Talk about stupid! Not my wife, of course. She is perfect in every way. But these shows! I think the one we watched all night last night was called "Ghost Hunters" but who really knows.
Anyway, they dress up these three ridiculous guys to look like the Three Stooges (IMHO), and send them to old houses that have creaks and animals running through the walls. But of course, those sounds are interpreted as ghosts saying "Get out!" or "Bring me a TV dinner!" To which the Stooges are always replying "WHOAAAAA!!! DUDE!!!!!"
Last night, the Stooges were at some voodoo house in Louisiana, and it had been an old slave plantation, so there were outlying buildings that had been used by and for the slaves back in the 1800s.
The Stooges went up to one empty building (a shack, really), and - THE INSIDE LIGHTS WENT ON AND OFF WHILE THEY WERE OUTSIDE! They filmed it from the outside and everything! A local who was around for some unknown reason said that was the work of a "LuLu", which is Cajun for "ghost" or perhaps "patsy" or maybe even "sucker".
Well, wouldn't that be proof positive of a ghost? And wouldn't you naturally go inside with all your green cameras, noise recorders, and proton energy field machines to capture this ghost?
Not these guys!
They went to ANOTHER building and spent the night. But it was so scary! The bodybuilder guy (who thinks wearing t-shirts two sizes too small is a necessary part of hunting ghosts) swore that someone...or someTHING had tapped his chair while he was sitting in it! WHOAAAAA!!!!! DUDE!!!!!
I had always thought the stupidest show on TV was either the Fake Housewives of Wherever, or maybe I Was a Teenage Kardashian, or possibly Our First House (you know, the show where young people go looking at houses and are impressed with features like walls).
But now there is a new champion in town!

My cousin's wife is really into the ghost hunting shows. She even goes out ghost hunting with some of her friends. It can be a hoot reading what they do on Facebook. I tried to watch one of these shows once but it put me to sleep.

That's Ghost Adventures...and they are a JOKE!
I enjoy watching Ghost Hunters because they are NOTHING like the "3 stooges" you speak of in your post! But these shows appeal to different folks, and many out there believe in ghosts and I feel that these shows are popular, because people are trying to justify the idea that there might be life after death. Nothing wrong with it, to each his own.

There's no evidence that it is fake, unless you can prove that the owners of the places haunted are playing along as well. There's also the fact that there are other videos, audio of ghosts from the same sights they investigate.
TAPS has been doing this for many years. You would have thought they would have been debunked by now.

I love ghost shows, but that one Ghost Lab featuring Barry and Brad?? with the vans and everything does sound a bit layed on. The one episode in the Lemp mansion was quite funny. Much better is the British series Most Haunted, with proper mediums who go to some real spooky looking places. You Americans think a rundown gingerbread gothic mansion from the 1890s is spooky, try a 14th century castle on a foggy moor with skulls set into pointed arches, thats scary. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

OF COURSE the owners of the "haunted" places are playing along!
How else would they get people to keep coming to their "haunted" place and giving them money? Hellooo!

Did that van have "Mystery Machine" written on the side?

i don't know the name of the show you saw but i think the Ghost Hunters International team are genuine ;
when i was in the US i saw an episode about a house in the Netherlands on which 2 notorious tools/clowns claimed to live (and have lived) in a haunted house i was really sceptical towards this show but much to my surprise the team came to the conclusion the house wasn't being haunted
