Jamaica VS. The Bahamas vs. The rest of the Carribean... I'm thinking of taking a trip. Has anybody on the org been to either island or the carribean? Do you have a preference and why? What did you do there? [Edited 3/31/11 13:27pm]

I´ve spent quite a long time in THIS country [img:$uid]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/KoolEaze/SunglassesWavesPalmtreesBeach2.jpg[/img:$uid] .............and I loved it.
( Costa Rica, the place you see in the picture is the Caribbean part of Costa Rica, called Cahuita, and most people there speak Jamaican English because they´re the descendants of Jamaican workers).
I have neither been to Jamaica nor to the Bahamas but I know people who have been to both places and while the Bahamas are probably a tad more laid back and beautiful, Jamaica is definitely much cheaper and probably also very laid back but in a different way. I´ve also heard that Jamaica is a little bit more dangerous than the Bahamas, but that of course depends on where you hang out. If you are a resort type of guy, then I don´t see any problems.
( I hate resorts. ) " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Are you allowed to go to Cuba? That is also a very beautiful and VERY safe country, and you can hear great music all the time, everywhere. I loved it but they really want your money so bad that it got a bit on my nerves. Other than that, I loved the vibe and the people and the atmosphere there. Very intelligent and creative people, too. Jamaica and Bahamas are awesome, but they can't compete with my island.....
There's not really a difference between the two especially if you're just going to stay in a tourist spot. There'll be beaches, sun, and white people. Oh and you'll meet locals who are getting paid just to make tourists feel like they're getting inside information about the island.

Spent a week in Jamaica this past October. It was my 3rd trip outside the U.S in the last 3 years. We enjoyed it, but not as much as our previous trips to Mexico. The beach and the water was pretty. But the people there were not very friendly and constantly trying to figure out how to get in your wallet. If you're not doing the fucking, then you're taking one.

I don't know about the other islands (that aren't US Territories), but if you're gay, don't go to Jamaica; such things are illegal there, and the danger is not worth the risk. If you're not gay and must go, I hear it's best to stay within a resort b/c crime against tourists is bad, too.
Puerto Rico, which is part of the US (sadly, many ppl don't know this; they think it's a sep. country like Mexico), is AMAZING. soo much to do and see on that tiny little island and the BEST pina coladas in the world! Hag. Muse. Web Goddess. Taurean. Tree Hugger. Poet. Professional Nerd. Geek.

I love mexico and the people are so friendly...I just a little caution about all the violence lately. Usually I just stay on the beach...but If I go back I have to see the pyramids.
I forgot about Puerto Rico. Do you have any recommendations of where to stay or things to do? I like hanging at the beach, snorkeling, experience local cultures, etc

I've been to both Jamaica and The Bahamas. Although, I liked the resort and beaches in Jam, I did not feel safe. We were told not to venture off our resort without a guided tour. The music is awesome and the food was very good, but I would not go back. The Bahamas is very nice and I felt safer there. We were able to go anywhere.
I prefer Tortola or Grand Caymen or Turks and Caicos. These are much nicer then Jam and Bahamas.
Hawaii is my favourite vacation destination - hands down!

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I always stay with ppl I know, but I've always wanted to stay at El Convento (an old convent turned into a hotel) in Old San Juan, and visit the El Yunque rainforest. Popular places to stay: San Juan/Old San Juan, Ponce, Rincon ~ the main island is only about 110 miles wide and 40 miles North-South, so you can take in/experience a lot if you stay a week or so

I've been to St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. John and the Dominican Republic...Punta Cana. Out of all of them the Dominican was the best.
I hear so many stories of people being robbed in Jamaica...from their hotels in the fancy resorts.
I REALLY want to go to Belize. But right now I would settle for Florida...it fucking snowed here last night

I would LOVE to see Cuba NOW, before the restrictions are lifted and capitalism turns it into another Disney-fied tourist trap.
I believe that if you fly to Mexico (Cancun for example) you can then book a short flight to Cuba...and they won't even stamp your passport!

Well at any resort in the world you won't experience everyday life of local people. If you want to do that you need to choose a different type of vacation. I agree with Maytiana, as it is with any known touristy locations...
I went to Ocho Rios, Jamaica in 2007 and Paradise Island, Bahamas in 2005.
I personally enjoyed the Bahamas more, but it was a nicer hotel, so....?
While I like Jamaicain food (yay Jerk pork), I don't like the culture and music. It's kinda vulgar to me.
Of course when we were driving from the airport to our nice hotel in the Bahamas, we witnessed a man getting the sh*t kicked out of him by a gang of other guys.
I'm a big fan of Cozumel (for the snorkeling/scuba) and Cancun (beautiful beaches, but lots of young party people). I like the beaches in Cancun better than the Bahamas and Jamaica.
Beach vacations are all pretty much the same to me...bikini, fruity cocktail, sunscreen (no one wants a bad sunburn on vacation), and a good book to read on the beach.
