WASHING MACHINES: Front-loading vs. Top-loading Does one clean clothes better than the other?

I'm not sure about cleaning better but Front loading uses less water and electricity.
If you want a machine that really does an excellent job, buy the Kenmore Elite series. You're a real fucker. You act like you own this place--ParanoidAndroid <-- about as witty as this princess gets! I hope everyone pays more attention to Sags posts--sweething Jesus weeps

I like front loaders because you can load them up really full, they don't get off balance, and they save water & energy, as mentioned above.
Also, the agitator in top loaders seems to agitate my clothes, ie fuck them up!
Plus, with a front loader, you can stack them & save space My Legacy

The only thing that's not great about the front-loading washer is that once you've started it, it's locked and you can't open the door. Which sucks if you're like me and inevitably find a sock or a shirt that should be in there with the rest of the load.
But other than that, front-loading is the way to go.

My forntloader unlocks. Just hit the "pause" button and then it unlocks. I've never heard of a frontloader that doesn't let you stop it whenever you want to either add an item or remove an item. I am Sir Nose, devoid of funk

I got a front loader last year when my top loader kicked the bucket. It does clean the clothes way better! They do have top loaders without the agitator now. My mom bought one a couple of years ago and it does a great job !

I found top loaders with the same features as the front loader (minus the front load). (ie steam/ less water usage then reg top loaders etc.) The only downside I found with front loaders is that some models (a lot) are design to sit on a wood floor or tile floor. In other words, the machines will be unbalanced, unless you have the "stands" to put them on. The other negative is that bacteria can build up in the seal of the front loader and cause a stink. So, unless you leave the door open when not in use it causes a bad smell. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Neither type picks up my clothes and washes them for me

Mine unlocks, too. It just makes you wait a few seconds before you can open the door.
I love my front loader. It uses less water and it's a lot gentler on my clothes (ie, causes less fading and wear because there is no agitator to cause friction). The key to getting clothes really clean is to make sure you use HE (High Efficiency) detergent. HE is specially formulated for use in less water. If you use regular detergent, your clothes will come out very dingy because it doesn't rinse properly in an HE machine.
Of course, your clothes are going to come out dingy anyway if you overstuff the machine. Clothing needs to be able to tumble freely in a front loader in order to get clean.
As for a mildewy smell, it definitely helps to leave the door (and the detergent "drawer") ajar when not in use. Tide detergent also makes a washing machine cleaner that works very well. But as long as you don't seal the machine when not in use, you won't have to use something like that very often.
