Looking for Suggestions on JAPAN

....outside of Tokyo though.

I understand some of you have been to Japan or lived there.

I'm interested in cities outside of Tokyo or in other regions

that are great places to spend a few days.

They don't need to be places were English is spoken.

check out kyoto. there are enough temples and shrines there to keep anyone occupied.

Depending on how much time you have, check out the region of Kinki. There's much to see and do if you have a rail pass for this region-Kyoto is a must see and is the quintessential Japan. I loved it

Thanks, JD!

I'll check it out. I might actually do soul though if my schedule and budget don't permit Japan.

But, Japan is the aim right now.

I love this part of the world. It's so diverse.

Usually when I go to Japan, I stay with good friends in Tokyo so I don't get out of the city much.

So on my second-last trip there, in order to se a bit more of the country, I flew into Fukuoka and took a week going across towards Tokyo, stopping in Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka. That was fun but still a bit conservative - next time I go I might rent a motorbike for a week to see things a bit off the beaten path.

If you do tour around, try getting a price for an open-jaw air ticket (www.skyscanner.net is pretty good for that) as Japanese rail fares are a bit high for going back to where you started. I used www.hostelworld.com to book rooms in budget hotels and ryokans - not 5-star luxury but I'm not fussy once it's safe, clean and cheap.

But last year I just stayed in the city again - I'd been in China and North Korea for the 2 weeks previously and I just wanted to embrace the decadence of Tokyo.

Like food that wasn't dog.. lol

Well I suggest you come soon whilst it's still Spring. Summer's here are quite humid and uncomfortable.
