The day is coming soon when all entertainment (music, film, books, games) will be digital files on a massive hard drive in a person's home.
I can see fine art going digital after that. Hang a digital frame on your wall and with the press of a button, a different painting or photograph can appear inside. Sculpture can be digital too.
It's already here 4 a lot of folks. I like a mixture of both. |

it makes sense. less waste/packaging
they will need to find a way to copy protect or the system may collapse. It will no longer be lucrative enough for companies to bother anymore! |

The only problem I have with it is how are guests supposed to see what an elitist you are if all your snobby books, albums and movies are not on display? |

Once you go Popcorn Hour, high speed internet and torrents there isnt a need for Blurays either.....unless you just like collecting packaging. |

I have never downloaded a movie.
Quality concerns and them stringing together a series of files the then transfer to disc . . . . .
Nah. IF I like it that much I'll buy it. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think. |

Nah. IF I like it that much I'll buy it.
No quality concerns....straight Bluray rips.
No need to transfer to disc....reads right off the hard drive.
But to each his own. |

I don't believe it will ever become a 100% complete switch. There will always be people who want to hold a product in their hand who will be willing to pay for the experience. For now I'm still one of them. I like holding records in my hand and I like taking a disc out of the case to put in the blu-ray player. |

If they could find a way to save space by eliminating a physical partner and have sex through a computer, they'd do that too. Everything doesn't need to be inside a computer because there's nothing like the real thing. Andy is a four letter word. |

Which would be dull as hell because how you decorate your place shows your personality to your guests. Andy is a four letter word. |

I still like going to the cinema. It's $2 here in Bkk on Wednesdays at one place, and $4 or $5 at other times. I like it feeling like a special event you make a point to go out for.

Dull as hell to you, but maybe not to others. Not decorating would show your personality too! MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!! |

I agree with you that buying movies on disc will become a niche market like how vinyl records have become. |

But what about extra info, bonus footage, outtakes, liner notes etc.etc.?
I´m with Suprman here, I still buy DVDs that I like. Most of the downloaded stuff gets lost in oblivion somewhere on my harddisk, including burned DVDs.
But I know where my store bought DVDs with the nice packaging are. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?" |

I know of very few dvd's that come with liner notes. And you can get the bonus footage and outtakes if you download straight bluray rips.
I have 4 terabytes of dedicated media storage, all in network attached storage, all tagged with posters/box artwork, all backed up. I take pride in my digital media just like I did with my physical media . |

I download movies (just so that's clear) and I have a very high end system (from the PC to the blu-ray player to the tv). They DO NOT look the same. Do they look good? Yes, they do. It depends on how they're ripped and/or compressed, but yeah, the files, played from a hd or burned to a disc do look good. But they do not look the same as a shiny new disc played directly through a blu-ray player with the correct cables connected to a good hd tv. The science of it proves all that pretty quickly. So again, there will never be a complete switch. Not anytime soon, anyway. |

Which sounds like Netflix streaming quality. I'd rather buy. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think. |

So again, there will never be a complete switch. Not anytime soon, anyway. Like u said it depends on what you download. If you download a straight bluray rip in BDMV format it is the exact same thing as a shiny new disc. If you download a mkv version it is compressed and how much compression and what bitrate it's encoded in makes all the difference. And my Popcorn Hour is specifically designed to play movies, it's connected directly to my HDTV through HDMI and it has a chip that rivals stand alone bluray players. No, there won't be a complete switch anytime soon because most people still don't have high speed Internet nor the technical savvy or patience to deal with the download culture. Hell most people dont even have HD channels for their HDTV nor is it hooked up right if they do! |

Which sounds like Netflix streaming quality. I'd rather buy. Netflix quality does suck! But there's a HUGE difference between a stream and a proper (but of questionable legality) download. |
