One thing that no one mentions in these "gym" threads is the aspect of intimidation that I firmly believe is a major reason for keeping people from working out.

It took me a LONG time (and a recent forced attitude readjustment) to get over the ridiculous notion that people are "staring at me"...especially being a guy that can only move 20lb dumbells while grunts on either side are moving 120lb ones! (OK, in all honesty, that still bothers me but having a buddy or two working out with me eases that.)

But now that I'm at a larger gym with a wider range of members (from muscleheads to scrawny dudes and everything in between) all doing their own thing, the intimidation factor is no longer a determining factor.

I know of women who won't step foot in a gym because they aren't happy with the way they look, which to me is the same thing (probably intimidated by shapelier females).

Does the gym intimidate anyone here?

Trust me, you're not alone. That self-concsious feeling hovered over me at first, but I got over that quickly because I noticed that almost everybody were busy doing their own thing to bother scrutinizing other folks. And its not only me, I've known many friends who pointed out the same thing only to beat that notion a week from their start, well, 1/2 of them really lol Plus, its a drag at first esp if you spent long periods without work out, your body don't cooperate with you, and you end up the next day moving like you were hit with bricks all over your body.

I'll tell you one thing though, I've seen over-weight women & men come EVERYDAY for the past two years I've been here, and seeing their positive transformation gave me a big boost when there were days when I don't feel like stepping outside my doorstep, let alone work out, the pros weren't the only ones who made me aspire to outdo myself. I've learned alot from these folks without having ANY conversation with them.

I say have a big dose of "fuck it" and enjoy yourself nod

lol

Funny you say that...with everything going on, my friend says that I'm just looking to get into "fucking" shape. innocent

This is one of the reasons I'm happy we have a fitness facility where I work. Nobody tries to "put on the dog" by overdressing.

And honestly, how can you ever be intimidated by your boss again once you've seen her naked? lol

Why do you work out? I don't at the moment due to my health problems, but will hopefully be back at it in the next 2 months. I do it for weight loss and because it just makes me feel good.

How long to you work out? Usually for 45 minutes to an hour.

Are you a member of a gym? No

How often to you workout? When I do, it's usually 4-5 times a week.

Do you want to loose weight, tone up, or beef up? I do it to lose weight and tone up.

How many reps do you do? 10

How many sets do you do? 4

Do you eat right? Most of the time

What do you do on your recovery days? I rest, sometimes I'll do some stretching or pilates moves as it relaxes me smile

Why do you work out? Don't wanna die, wanna feel better about myself...and, I know if I work hard, I can tap into that fab metabolism on my mother's side. My mother wasn't skinny, but she was curvy and healthy and so gorgeous!

How long to you work out? 15 minutes on the elliptical, or 30 minutes to an hour with wii sports or just dance. When it gets warmer, I'm thinking about walking the bike path behind my local bank or looking for a track to run around.

Are you a memeber of a gym? Noooo I feel very uncomfortable in gyms. Even all-female gyms.I'd have to lose weight to be able to go there and lose weight...

How often to you workout? five days a week

Do you want to loose weight, tone up, or beef up? lose weight and tone up.

How many reps do you do? varies

How many sets do you do? varies

Do you eat right? Mostly, yes. Fruits, veggies, water, fiber, whole grains, veggie or vegan meals from time to time...a lot less junk food but i totally crave it sometimes. A little later in the year, I'm going to be eating a lot more of health food like Seattle Sutton's diet.I do have my naughty days and a naughty late night or two. But then I remember--I want to be able to look good in heels again. lol

What do you do on your recovery days? rest, rub blue cooling salve on myself.

I really enjoy working out but I will never understand the Locker room environment.

Yesterday this dude smelled so bad....I thought I shit my own pants lol I really didn't know where the funk was coming from.

And this other dude.....he couldn't seem to find his pants. He must of been standing nude in the locker room have a 30 minute conversion with 3 other dudes. I put my jacket in my locker.....did about 30 minutes of a workout....went back into the locker room because i forgot my I pod....and the dude was still standing there buck naked 30 minutes later...WTF!

I almost had a fit when I saw a dude blow-dry his junk with the hair dryer - WTF????? And then you have dudes making out in the steam room, which is against gym rules.

But I'm sure the ladies' locker room has its share of hijinks.

I should go this afternoon. It's a perfect day for it - not much going on, my boss is gone. If I'd been smart, I'd've brought my swim gear and done laps (which takes more time because I have to "put myself back together" afterward).

Oh, well...maybe some Indian clubs and spinning...

Why do you work out? Because it's healthy, makes you feel better, increases your body awareness, makes you look better and makes your sex life better.

How long to you work out? Almost daily for at least 30 minutes, if running for 1-2 hours (which I do almost every day too) doesn't count.

Are you a memeber of a gym? I used to be, but I didn't like the look and smell of other people, so I decided to simply continue at home.

How often to you workout? 6 times a week.

Do you want to loose weight, tone up, or beef up? I'm quite slim, but I prefer it that way anyway. I just do it to feel better.

How many reps do you do? 25-30.

How many sets do you do? 3.

Do you eat right? I'm a vegetarian. I could use some more proteins, but I'm not an unhealthy eater.

What do you do on your recovery days? Only small exercises in the morning to wake up my body. Sometimes I go for a 30-minute-jog. Sometimes I get a massage.

Why do you work out?-Generally to keep my weight in check. I started running again over a year ago to lose weight. I've ran two Marathons since then, and I'm happy with my curent weight.

How long to you work out?-Anywhere from 45 minutes at the Gym to three hours or more during my long runs on any given Sunday.

Are you a memeber of a gym?-Yes

How often to you workout?-I finished the L.A. Marathon last March 20th (in the pouring rain), so I've only ran twice this week. During a typical week, I'll run 4 to 5 times a week.

Do you want to loose weight, tone up, or beef up?-Just some toning up. I need to get back to some strength training.

How many reps do you do?-none, I just run mostly

How many sets do you do?-none, unless you're talking about running intervals, which I do plenty when I training for a race.

Do you eat right?-Probably not. My diet consists of anything Vegetarian at Trader Joes, and that includes the bad stuff lol .

What do you do on your recovery days?-Absolutely nothing, jsut rest.
