Brazilian Blowout: Any of you had one?

My homegirl had a Brazilian Blowout done today and says she loves it already. She will only have to get the treatments every 16 weeks. When she told me about it I told her that I'd heard there were a lot of issues due to the high amount of formaldehyde used in the product.

I haven't had a perm in almost 2 years and I'm thinking of going back straight but I do not want to do another perm. Folks say that the BB leaves your hair with a lot more body and healthier than a perm.

So, gimme the skinny on the BB if you've had one or know someone who has. cool

first time I heard about it was a few weeks ago when this popped up in my Yahoo! News page

http://news.yahoo.com/s/a...an_blowout

Kind of long, but I think worth the read

~ if a salon is using a homemade batch to get around laws/regulations, I wouldn't think it's worth the health risks (or the $120 or so for it) --- if children can't even be in the location if this treatment is being done on someone, why would one want to breathe it in themselves/have it on their skin via the scalp to absorb who-knows-what -?

A few days later, Latina magazine had a chat session with their Beauty Editor.. When I asked about the Blowout, she replied:

I just wrote about how the Brazilian straightening treatments contain formaldehyde, a cancer-causing ingredient. It's definitely concerning for hair stylists who expose themselves daily:

First of all, I thought the same thing as Kim. I was like, "Huh, why would they want to blow it out? And what does that mean exactly?" lol

Second, damn! The things women will do to themselves in the name of beauty. disbelief

Yeah, I saw that story. Looks like the biggest risks are to the stylists who have prolonged exposure.

lol I know what it is, but I have to admit my mind was thinking freaky stuff too. Before I read that article a while ago, I thought about getting one. I was between products for my natural hair and I was having a hard time accepting that my hair is just really thick and can't agree with every single thing.

eek Then I read about the heat, read some horror stories of one lady LOSING her hair, and that was it. No blowout for the kid! I'm happy to be nappy....ohgoon I got a big head and I can't afford to be risking baldness. It's a true beauty extreme and a lot of women I knew as kids lived by these things. Noooo Lord.

I never had it done but do my own hair and just found a product that has Brazilian Karatin in it and it works very nicely in my hair. I've seen pictures of people who had it done but if it wasn't so expensive to do my hair, I would do it.
