The bestest part of your post is that now I know you've already seen it and I don't have to feel guilty about shutting it down as a movie-night option. So YAY FOR ME! woot!

Of the movies I didn't already have, I immediately did a blind buy of The Double Life of Veronique, The Naked Kiss and The BBS Story box set as soon as the blu-ray sale began so those should arrive this week. Then after doing some research went back a few days later and bought Senso and Sweet Smell of Success albeit after they were sold out so those will arrive later this month after they are restocked. The excellent reviews and screen shots of the latter won me over--1957 New York City at night perfectly captured in black & white sounded dreamy.

I was strongly considering Fish Tank also, but despite all the positive reviews I've read, it seems like more of a rental and not a movie I'd watch repeatedly. I haven't seen Kes or Blow Out, but would consider renting those too.

Very cool! I should have Double Life from my blockbuster queue on Tuesday. Based on the reviews, it seems like it's a love it or hate it type movie. And I've just seen too many Criterions where I've gone in wanting to love them but wound up not caring for them at all. (Although i suspect I am going to really like Double Life from the tone of the positive reviews).

Interesting choice on Senso. Why that one? Do you own and like The Leopard (which I think was by the same director)?

The BBS Story box is incredibly cheap, which almost made me pull the trigger too. But the more I looked over all of the movies in it, i'm not so sure I could really get into many of them. Too much hippee shit. (j/k) biggrin

I take it you do some of your homework on bluray.com? That site is an absolute dream. I actually asked the mods if there was a way to donate to the site but they won't take anything.

The only Criterion movie I bought and eventually sold after I watched it was The Night Porter. I've been pleased with very other blind buy.

Melodramatic period pieces are my thing (my favorite movies ever being Elizabeth and La reine Margot) so Senso seems like a pretty safe bet. However, when researching and viewing clips of The Leopard, I wasn't so interested for some reason. Have you seen either one?

I check the news forum in bluray.com daily and agree it's a great site.

Fast Five was decent. A bit over-the-top with the final chase scene. Actually, it was an impossible chase scene. The ensemble was solid though. Rock added a good turn. His fight scene with Vin was pretty cool. It made 83 million, so there's gonna be Fast Six, especially after a few credits roll, there's a scene that cemented the next installment.

I did see the Leopard and thought it was good, but certainly not great. So while I was tempted by the cheap price to own it on Blu Ray, I ultimately would just be buying it for having it's sake, (a REAL BIG problem for me when it comes to CDs and DVDs). To be honest, the reason I didn't buy Senso was because it was from the same director and had the same look/feel. I'll be excited to hear your review of it though in case the sale is still going on by the time you watch it.

My girlfriend and I LOVE Elizabeth, but have never heard of La reine Margot (just added to my queue now for next week). I have Double life and Modern Times coming tomorrow. Five Easy Pieces and Shock Corridor coming later in the week.

I have a feeling you are going to consider this next comment heresy, but here goes...

My worst experience on a blind buy from Criterion was Wings of Desire. I love slow paced character driven movies, but that one made me want to gouge my eyeballs out. The story itself was very intrigung, they just took two and a quarter hours to tell a 15 minute tale IMO.

Talk soon my friend.

Another Year (2010)

people's lives keep changing with seasons while one couple remains happy.

I really enjoyed the honesty of the film, particularly Lesley Manville's stellar performance.

it's a really good film but I'd say definitely not something you'd watch again. maybe the last scene you'd repeat once or twice coz it's really good but that's about it really.

I think what sold me on Senso was it being described as a "tragic romance" as well as a period piece which is what Elizabeth and La Reine Margot basically are as well. I'm a sucker for that in addition to gothic romances like Bright Star and the recent Jane Eyre remake.

Wings of Desire is sitting on my shelf waiting to be seen since I bought it at the last Criterion half price sale. lol

Saw this last year at an advance screening here with director Mike Leigh and most of the cast in a Q&A session afterward. Very, very good.

Same here! Let's see Criterion blu rays sitting on my shelf unopened =

Mystery Train, Red Shoes, Paths of Glory, Benjamin Button, Breathless, Thin Red Line

And yet go figure, I just ordered three more.

Regarding Wings of Desire, it's been my experience that most people think of it as a candidate for one of their favorite movies of all time. Don't know if you belong to netflix/blockbuster etc but you may want to try renting that first if you have the option before you open it. Like I say, most people think it's a work of beauty/genius but it did almost nothing for me. One of the only Criterion's I have been completely disappointed with owning.

I'm sure that went amazing, very lucky!

btw, I saw you mention liking period films with tragic romance stories which made me wonder if you've seen Angel (2007) from director Francois Ozon?

I find that film to be truly underrated, if only for the magical atmosphere the director created for it, it was such a joy to watch.

Breathless is excellent. I've watched it twice on disc since I bought it--five stars.

I saw Benjamin Button at the cinema and thought it was very good, but it's not the type of movie I'd buy. The last few minutes of the film are incredibly sad.

The Red Shoes I will watch this weekend at my parents' place. My dad's blu-ray player is hooked up to a projector so I like to save some movies to watch there since it makes them look so much better. I've watched the Criterion releases of Charade, Repulsion and The Third Man on the projector in the past. All were stunning.

I'll let you know what I think about Wings Of Desire after I see it which admittedly won't be anytime soon. lol Too many films ahead of it on my personal queue.

Great to hear about Breathless. 5 stars? That's great. I'll have to unwrap that one ASAP.

I also neglected to mention Che. I don't know why I bought it as it seems to be one of the lowest rated Criterion movies, but I like Sodenberg and Benicio Del Toro so i figured why not.

Watched Double Life of Veronique last night and thought it was decent, but not ownership worthy. Probably give it 2.5 to borderline 3 stars. Also watched Chaplin's Modern Times. I thought it was very good. On the fence about owernship/rewatchability, but it was defintiely a good viewing - 3.5 to 4 stars.

Watching Red Shoes at your folks house on a blu ray projector sounds like an absolute dream. Your folks are really into cinema too then huh? My folks like movies, but don't really get into watching DVDs at home so I wouldn't have that kind of option as much as I would love it.

Shock Corridor and Five Easy Pieces are next in the queue.

I like to get my James Bond on every now and then... and this time, they dressed the hell out of this man, lifted practically every iconic look they could from Steve Mcqueen. Slow plot, but a nice cheeky ending, and because I really just enjoyed the movie for its fashion choices for Craig's neo-Bond 3.9/5 star star star star
