I just watched this last night.

It is better than the original in my opinion.

It had a stronger emotional current, better tension, and more believable characters (like the bullies, who were quite silly in the original).

Don't get me wrong--the original was good. I just liked this one better.

I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

It was Sweden in the 80s. What were bullies there at that time supposed to be like? rolleyes

it creeped me out going up to Blackeberg last summer shake I asked my grandma if she saw many vampires up there - but I didn't know the swedish word for vampire, so I said it in english with a swedish accent, and explained they drank human blood, and she was like WTF are you talking about???? falloff

The Freedom Writers - 4 1/2 stars

If it makes me cry, it's good and I cried a few times unexpectedly. The only thing was that I think theres more than one movie with this type of story line about an inspiring teacher.

freaking funny stuff! the project takes the B movie format and style, then spins it, satirizing the formulaic qualities of your typical B movie and comes up with yet another entertaining adventure wherein Bruce saves the world from alien conquerors and gets the girl.

I think Ewan McGreggor was robbed of a supporting actor nomination. hmph!

As much as I wanted to I just couldn't get past Jim Carrey being "Jim Carrey" to really let myself fall in love with this movie. Didn't love it, but didn't hate it. Ewan and the incredibility of the story itself were the best parts of the film for me.

Hmmm. hmmm Looks very intriguing... Adding this one to queue now.

Just finished watching Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and give it a firm star star star star star out of 5 Stars. Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis are a popular columnist and a press agent who will both stop at nothing to get their way. The storyline is very solid, but the dialog is off the charts brilliant.

The Exorcist (1973) Hadn't seen this one in a dog's age and watched the extended cut for he first time last night. The movie is about two and a quarter hours long and the build up to the actual possession takes nearly an hour and a half. The reputation this movie has as being one of the best horror films ever is truly deserved IMO. Sheer brilliance. star star star star star out of 5.

Le Cercle Rouge (1970) French crime (quasi-gangster) drama about the chance pairing of a recently released ex-con with a fugitive from the law. The potential for this film was great and the characters were strong. I just didn't like the execution on some of the key moments of the film and thought the ending was sloppy. star star out of 5.

Love and Basketball (2000) This one was on BET last night and watched it for the first time. Very strong film about a boy and a girl who are childhood class mates, grow up to together and fall in love with each and basketball. Couple of obligatory Hollywood moments thrown in keep this from being perfect, but overall I thought this was a very strong and enjoyable film. star star star star out of 5.

you need to watch the original version though, which is almost 5 1/2 hours long. actually it was first released as a three-part miniseries in France. then it was cut and released at cinemas as a 2 1/2 hours long film.

Hey my friend! Me too!

I actually did a blind buy on Kes and Blow Out, but decided I wanted to have a look at Sweet Smell of Success, Double Life of Veronique, Cercle Rouge and Modern Times before buying.

After watching Sweet Smell I have to to tell you I think you're in for a real treat. Just such smart dialog. I bought it right after viewing it. Cercle Rouge didn't work for me at all.

Have you seen Kes, Blow Out or Double Life of Veronique?

I actually took a quick peak and the only version I can find of this is an import for beaucoup dollars (and it appears as though blockbuster doesn't carry it). Any suggestions on where I can find it?

Thanks!

Of the movies I didn't already have, I immediately did a blind buy of The Double Life of Veronique, The Naked Kiss and The BBS Story box set as soon as the blu-ray sale began so those should arrive this week. Then after doing some research went back a few days later and bought Senso and Sweet Smell of Success albeit after they were sold out so those will arrive later this month after they are restocked. The excellent reviews and screen shots of the latter won me over--1957 New York City at night perfectly captured in black & white sounded dreamy.

I was strongly considering Fish Tank also, but despite all the positive reviews I've read, it seems like more of a rental and not a movie I'd watch repeatedly. I haven't seen Kes or Blow Out, but would consider renting those too.

Very cool! I should have Double Life from my blockbuster queue on Tuesday. Based on the reviews, it seems like it's a love it or hate it type movie. And I've just seen too many Criterions where I've gone in wanting to love them but wound up not caring for them at all. (Although i suspect I am going to really like Double Life from the tone of the positive reviews).

Interesting choice on Senso. Why that one? Do you own and like The Leopard (which I think was by the same director)?

The BBS Story box is incredibly cheap, which almost made me pull the trigger too. But the more I looked over all of the movies in it, i'm not so sure I could really get into many of them. Too much hippee shit. (j/k) biggrin

I take it you do some of your homework on bluray.com? That site is an absolute dream. I actually asked the mods if there was a way to donate to the site but they won't take anything.
