They've evacuated 10km around the nuclear plant. The core continues to heat up. Last I hear its 1000 time hotter than its normal temperature.

hmmm ummm why was there a nuclear reactor built near a fault line?

And why is it the thing to videotape tragedies instead of trying to save one's ass?

And why is it we humans are so shocked at massive loss of life during natural events when we've decided to build cities filled with millions of people on fault lines, near hurricane belts, near coasts, near volcanos..... This will continue to happen and be tragic because there are basically too many people on this planet, the loss of life scale is enormous.

BTW, does Canada ever have any problems?

I wondered the same thing... I guess they needed an energy source on the island. But man.... what engineer said "This looks like a good place to do it!" dunce

I am glad that Japan was better prepared this time because of what took place in 2004

Thank God for that.... it could have been worse, though I con not nor do I want to imagine that.

^All of Japan is built on a fault line. Japan has the strictest building earthquake codes in the world. The quake isnt the reason the reactor is overheating. The problem is that when the plant shut down, which is normal during a quake, the following tsunami took out the diesel powered cooling generators. Also remember that the tsunami went 6 miles into Japan. Now they are running on battries to keep the reactor cooling. Its basically a worse case scenerio.

So sad for the people, they had no time to rush away from the tsunami waves. Looks like the waves were traveling fast. And now the nuclear explosions...

I'm praying it stays boring up here. beg

If you're talking geological occurences, some pretty scary stuff definitely does happen in a country so big -- mostly storms around the Atlantic maritime provinces, flooding in the central plains, seismic activity along the Pacific Coast. But because so much of the population is concentrated inland and along the southern border, when Mom Nature goes batty in most parts of the country, she takes "only" maybe two lives here, five lives there.

Some DEVASTATING losses of life happened to Canada in the 1700s. (See the Newfoundland Hurricane of 1775 or the Tseax Cone eruption of the late 1700s. shake ) But over the past, say, 100 years, the greatest loss of life to a geological occurence was the Great Lakes Storm of 1913. It killed about 250 Canadians and Americans who lived in the lakes region.

Seems humans are considerably more efficient at killing themselves, though: The global Spanish Flu Outbreak of 1918 killed 50,000 Canadians; and 2,000 people died in the Halifax (Naval) Explosion of 1917.

Dear everybody in Prince.org,

Thank you so much for your kindness.

I live in Tokyo, and all of Princefam in here are safe.

On friday night all trains were stop, so I went home on foot

from the office to my home.

The room was confused because of the quake.

My TV screen was broken..it is still shaking...so scary..

But I am thankfully safe and okay.

Thank you for letting us live...

People in north of Japan has very serious consequences.

I hope they will be rescued safely.

I did.. I also gave blood to the red cross. O+. I doubt highly that any of my blood would go to any victim in Japan, though my blood is the type that could help many, and I know that. ... did you?

Funny, you ask only me that... do you have an issue with someone praying and thinking of foreigners half a globe away? confused

Fellow O+ here. We got that good blood. We give and give and it's hard for us to receive. shrug

That said, if I ever need blood, I'ma orgnote you...thanks in advance.

And that's cool of you to do that, make the trip to Red Cross and all.

I have friends that are first responders, so the need for blood is crucial in times of catastrophe.

I will be going back in a week to give more blood. The closest chaprter is just 8 blocks away from my front door, I wish I could do more.

Facebook and the gamers on FB have set up donation drives as well. nod It makes it easier to give for those that tend to be on FB/Twitter.
