This will come in very handy. My legs hurt for two days from squatting like some birthin' prehistoric woman for hours while I gardened on Sunday.

u don't need much space to grow stuff!.. i guess the allotment 'plot' measures about 40ft x 20ft & we pay £30 a year. our greenhouse is TINY! i'm talking 8ft square.. in uk we do everything on much smaller scale in the last couple of years growing your own has really taken off & the allotments are in demand. They were always something associated with old men & retirement! loads of younger people in2 it at the moment cuz it's easy & saves ££ i will try & get some pics once it's looking a bit tidier & everything is (hopefully) growing..
there are radishes & mizuna on my window sill..

Blueberry bushes have berries developing on them

Oh, your seedlings are loverly!
I haven't started planing yet except for my "exotic" seeds. I put them in last Sunday and hopefully I will be able to save this crop from thieves this year.
I would love to start a "community" garden in my neighborhood, but there are so many kids and teenagers who would have free access to the garden that I don't trust them to be respectful and leave the crops alone. I can see it now--some smartass kid would deliberately destroy something and I would be ready for blood. I don't need the aggravation.

Just found a cabbage worm on my kale.
I really want to try and keep everything organic so I won't jump the gun to pesticides on one worm. A few leaves on the brussels, kale and one tomato plant have holes but everything else seems to be going ok.

I use 100% natural ( usually homemade ) sprays with essential oils ( and never use chemical fertilizers - I use natural ones )
look up Neem oil
you can also plant sister herbs near veggie plants as some of their scents naturally repel bugs
example
Tomatoes and Basil ... | |

I just finished planting another rose bush and some more merigolds

Look up garlic sprays as a pesticide as well ~ really there are several different things that help and wont harm because they themselves are edible

I already got organic fertilizer. I will look up garlic sprays and such.

Just ordered some organic pesticide because I'm too lazy to make my own.

Lawd.. you've got the beginnings of a farm back there -- surely you can handle organic pesticide... you're gettin' a chemistry set for Xmas.. test tubes & beakers 'n stuff Hag. Muse. Web Goddess. Taurean. Tree Hugger. Poet. Professional Nerd. Geek.

All you have to do is make a solution of dishwashing detergent with a little sugar added and spray it on your plants.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I didn't say I couldn't figure out how. I said I was too lazy. I read the recipes of soaking 10 cloves garlic in mineral oil and just said , I'll just buy some.

wait... pour some oil plop 10 cloves in come back later spray

This years garlic is coming on a treat and my onions are starting to show nicely. Herbs doing well and salad leaves are ready. All is well. My climbing rose is over six foot now which is nice. Beautiful flowers when they show.

thanks & yeah i understand the problem with kids.. they get bored & think it's fun to trash stuff (little shits) it would be heartbreaking to put effort in to see it damaged. over here the allotments are fenced & padlocked but still get the occasional raid but with regards to community space... a little while back there was a local incident where a mystery person was digging up roadside grass verge, they had a serious crop going on!.. strawberries, tomatoes, leeks!! of course the authorities got all arsey about it.. one day the mystery gardener was seen tending the plot dressed as a tree!!.. funny stuff
anyway good luck with your exotic plants!

don't waste time & money on pest sprays & stuff!! in my experience nothing helps except daily squashing. find the eggs & squash.. get the caterpillers & squash them too. it's a tedious job & probably why i don't grow cabbagy stuff anymore, it's so much effort & can put u off wanting to eat it
