Aren't you in the northeast US as well? ... hmmm I may have to keep the cilantro in the window box. neutral

I'll still try growing them inside from younger plants... pray

Yes, I'm in New York City. I don't know if it was something I did/didn't do or just the nature of cilantro. After the first seedlings died I bought new seeds (different brand). I started some inside and some out. But they just didn't take. They had really weak stems and never got full. That, combined with the heat, was too much I guess; even though I made sure they were watered properly. That's why I'm trying "pre-grown" this spring.

Some of the people on this thread look like hard cores professionals! I don't use fertilizer or mulch or anything. I just wanted some fresh herbs to cook with. I wish our balcony was a bit bigger, I'd love to try a tomato plant but I think I need to succeed with the herbs first! I should be better - I grew up on a farm and my grandparents kept a garden at our house, with sweet corn, string beans, strawberries, watermelon, cateloupe, pumpkins, tomatoes, and peas. It's definitely harder when you only have pots and not much free time.

You might have a micro-climate. geek

I just read about it in the book I posted in my first blog link. lol

This thread if off to an awesome start! woot!

How long before threads auto lock?? We'll have to keep it going into Fall, even if there's a part 2 and 3. biggrin

Hell to the yeah.

You have no idea how excited I am. mushy

This is my first time starting from seed, and my first time doing my own garden. My whole childhood I helped my grandmother plant (and tend, and harvest) all her tomatoes, herbs, garlic, onions, zucchini, strawberries, cucumbers and watermelon - and tons of flowers: peonys, marigolds, zinnias, daisies, irises, coreopsis, cosmos, petunias, impatiens, geraniums... She taught me so much. I went from being a small child observing while she did all the work, to an adult doing all the work under her direction as she sat in the shade with a big hat on, unable to do any of the bending and digging but not about to let anyone at her garden unsupervised. lol

It's what you make it.

I love that "story". mushy I know about doing all the work while supervised from my mom. lol

We never had veggie gardens. I've just always wanted one, since our first home. Over there we had tons of shade and fuckin deer. After I turned and made this huge bed and planted...it all went to shit pissed, then in our second home we never got around to it, then the house before this one was all fuckin shade in the yard....so FINALLY!!!! excited

I love to garden. I didn't have much of a chance last year since I was sick. I've gotten some seeds started biggrin I have a quarter of an acre for a garden but we are increasing it to half an acre this weekend. The week of the 21st I will actually starting planting some early seeds. I also have a second garden that is smaller that will be for early plants this year. This year we are planting corn, potatoes, 5 kinds of tomato plants, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans, kohlarabi, 4 kinds of squash, peppers, radishes, cucumbers, etc. We also have a small orchard with peach trees, apple trees, grapevines, and some berry plants. Once I figure out how to post pics, I will. With the cost of produce around here and the low quality of produce, I will be canning and freezing a lot this year. biggrin

Yes!!

You guys don't understand... I have only one person IRL to "garden talk" with.

Everyone else I know gets like zzz when I start yapping.

I can't wait til growing season is in full swing for us all.

hmph! I dont know if I will ever talk gardening with you again since you chucked a worm at me.... lol I am still traumatized from watching squirm as a child.

In any event....my berberis survived the snow! YAY!!! The euphorbia are overly pink in a pepto way now that the snow has melted off of them more. I expect they will look awesome soon. and the butterfly bush....well, that is where the last patch of snow still remains.......

I need you all to know that painted is good with another type of stick.....ummmm...I mean the sticks on my hedges. Homegirl had some loppers and garden shears and took her time, cut back some excess stuff, and made my front hedges look like bonsai treess! They are the total envy of my street! They have that look like a tree straight outta the lion king or something for real......quite cool

Once I buy land here, I will start gardening.

I totally believe Square Foot gardening may be the best way

to reduce greenhouse gases, chemical polutants, and truly

know what's on your plate.

You and me are in the same boat. Stillgotit is as well.

I live in an apartment, but I am lucky enough to have community gardens to plant in. I don't own a lick of land, but I still get a chance to play in the dirt. yay!

I even get to mess around in Still's yard too. Yes, I'm weird that way. lol

I remember when we lived in the mountains in Northeast PA the summer came late and ended first. That sucks a little. I'm not planting in the ground (other than maybe some cooler crops like lettuce/broccoli) till probably next month or so. I have to check when our last frost is here in Northern VA.
