Potted plants here die... except for my huchera that I gave to Stillgotit. They are in her garden now, they got too big for my window box. I may do dwarf cannas in that box with the begonias and some ornamental small grasses.
I can't wait! | |

Nice!
this is the begonia that I pre-ordered last year for the window boxes to go with the cannas...
the begonias.... [img:$uid]http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc99/gataloca_bucket/400_beg_rex_escargot.jpg[/img:$uid]
fiber-optic grass... [img:$uid]http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc99/gataloca_bucket/fiberopticgrass.jpg[/img:$uid]
cork screw grass to poke out inbetween... [img:$uid]http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc99/gataloca_bucket/corkscrewrush.jpg[/img:$uid]
haven't ordered the dwarf cannas yet... they were out of stock, but I hope by 1st week of April they should have them... those will be to the back of the window boxes and I will use sweet licorice for a draping plant to edge it all.... if I find them at home depot.. if not the vinca will be added instead.
I will be doing herb window boxes too.

My current apartment has a small balcony with southwester exposure. Last year I had basil, dill, parsely, and some flowers. It was SO hot last summer that the only thing that did well was the basil. But when I brought it inside over the winter it died. I do have some other smaller basil that I kept inside all summer, but it's looking a little leggy.
This summer I am going to try rosemary, basil, cilantro (again), oregano, and some sort of flowers. I guess I should figure it out soon so I can get the seeds.
Good luck with the cilantro, and please post if you have success. Last year I tried to grow cilantro at least 4 times - both indoors and out - and had no sucess. It seems very finnicky and also seems to have a short growing season. I was trying to grow from seeds. This spring I am going to cheat and buy seedlings from the greenhouse.

It's now Autumn here... i love my garden in Autumn... all the deciduous trees are starting to colour - the brown, yellows and orange in between the all greens....
if i could change jobs right now i would def want to work on ppls gardens... i think you can really expose your creativity in a garden - using colour and shape and different dimensions
JOHN!!! remember my penis pussy thread... u even posted in it - that was all about gardening 2

Aren't you in the northeast US as well? ... I may have to keep the cilantro in the window box.
I'll still try growing them inside from younger plants...

Martha Stewart show cased these bad boys on her show... I immediately went online and pre-ordered mine last fall.... I was put on a damn waiting list.
I hope the fiber-optic grass really looks like this IRL, I will keep them for years since its a perennial, unless it look like plain crappy grass.

Our season is too short here to start from seed... 5 lettuces should make heck of a yummy salad!

Yes, I'm in New York City. I don't know if it was something I did/didn't do or just the nature of cilantro. After the first seedlings died I bought new seeds (different brand). I started some inside and some out. But they just didn't take. They had really weak stems and never got full. That, combined with the heat, was too much I guess; even though I made sure they were watered properly. That's why I'm trying "pre-grown" this spring.
Some of the people on this thread look like hard cores professionals! I don't use fertilizer or mulch or anything. I just wanted some fresh herbs to cook with. I wish our balcony was a bit bigger, I'd love to try a tomato plant but I think I need to succeed with the herbs first! I should be better - I grew up on a farm and my grandparents kept a garden at our house, with sweet corn, string beans, strawberries, watermelon, cateloupe, pumpkins, tomatoes, and peas. It's definitely harder when you only have pots and not much free time. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

You guys don't understand... I have only one person IRL to "garden talk" with. Everyone else I know gets like when I start yapping.
I can't wait til growing season is in full swing for us all.
