Oscar Micheaux's "Within Our Gates" (1920) which was a response to D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation" that flipped the scripped on that racist garbage. Then "Nothing But a Man" with Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln one of the soulfullest bluesiest ladies around. The of course "Lady Sings the Blues" and "Mahogany." The films your listing shouldn't really be classed as blaxploitation IMO. It's the pimp/ho/drug dealer/gangster films which literally exploit the black experience and suffering of the day which fall under the label "Blaxploitation". Yours are simply films with a black core cast. Um I knew this hence the very first line of my post: "Other films outside of the Blaxploitation genre that should still get peeped:" That'll teach me to skip right to the titles, this said I wouldn't class "Spook" as such either and you didn't use a disclaimer on that one. Haha. Why wouldn't you count "Spook"... that we must discuss "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

Don't forget the terrific Night of the Living Dead (1968) with its ironic end ( and political too) starring Duane Jones

Anyone mention "Black Mama, White Mama?"
Not blaxploitation, but worth a mention, Claudine. The theme song's got me thinking about Gladys Knight's film debut in Pipedreams. And speaking of singers in the movies I can't leave out Mahogany. And some old school actors... Calvin Lockhart (hot dayum, that man was FOIN!), Tamara Dobson, Sheila Frazier, William Marshall (he played Blacula and the King of Cartoons on Pee-Wee's Playhouse), Eric Laneuville, Jim Kelly, gosh! I could go on...

Haha. Why wouldn't you count "Spook"... that we must discuss It's just a more "worthy" (sounds pompous) take on societal issues than revellling in exploiting (by definition) the urban decay of pimps and hoes aspects of "black culture" IMO. Maybe my "blaxploitation" breakdown pointed out to some misguided soul that Eddie Murphy films don't count. That said, what is Beverly Hills Cop but a watered down Shaft? hmmm On second thoughts all my misguided post achieved was showing DigitalLisa how to spell "blaxploitation".

I really didn't think that Max Julien (where is he now?) was very convincing as a pimp. I don't know, something about his voice, too high...too Chris Tucker. Okay, that's exaggerating a bit, but still, not very pimp-worthy in my book.
