OK So I'm Watching Roots For The First Time...

Bought it on DVD. Haven't finished all of it yet...I'm up to the part when *SPOILER ALERT* Kizzy gets the news about you know who.

But I just gotta say that I'm being blown away. This shit is indeed a masterpiece. I wish I was alive when it originally aired.

I think everyone should see it once in their life. I watched it all with my family like 8 years ago. Really moving.

Watched it when it originally aired and again about 3 years ago. As a kid, u really miss all of the subtle stuff. I have a completely different appreciation of the movie and the reality of the struggle after watching it again as an adult.

Even though 'Roots' is mostly fiction, it was important for its time.

You read my mind. I just watched this a couple weekends back. Henry Cele drool

Great film about the Zulu warrior and his rise to power/military dominance and expansion of Zulu territory. It's an 80s film but I think with the right producers and directors it would be a great story to remake for today's audience.

For those who can remember....was Roots one of those movies that aired every year like Wizard of Oz?

Yes, I, too, own Shaka Zulu. How could you not, unless it's somehow unavailable.

A brief off-topic moment: Is it just me or did it seem that Shaka's paternal auntie wanted to be the king? IDK

But another movie that, I feel, is worth viewing is Mandingo. At least once, anyway.

I dont want to see it again either, I remember when I was a child my mother forced me to watch it and I had no idea what the series was about. She said to me its part of your history I was just happy to stay up to watch to tv late on a school night. There were scenes that really affected me and it was very hard for me to go to sleep cause I was too emotional.

I didnt want to see it again because I couldnt believe "Master Reynolds" aka 'Mike Brady' aka 'Robert Reed' coldheartedly sold "Kizzy". that scene remains embedded in my head.

Never got to see that one, but I did watch Queen. If I'm not mistaken, Queen was based on his (Alex Haley) father's side of the family. I don't know if it could be considered a "collector's item", but it's worth watching at least once.

As a child, it was kinda shocking/graphic to watch sad but slavery was by no means pretty so I guess Alex Haley did the best he could do with such a terrible subject. Those feelings about the movie just stuck with me and I've never wanted to see it again.

It's amazing to me that Denzel Washington never won an oscar for portraying Malcolm-the man did a great job and to this day Malcolm X is still one of my fav movies. I had read Alex Haley's book/Autobiography of Malcolm X as a teenager and Spike did a great job with the movie. Damn shame that they gave Denzel the Oscar for some bull instead of Malcolm X.

Hollywood wasn't gonna give an Oscar for the portrayal of a man that had issues with Jews/White America. But notice he won for having issues as a slave and as a thug.

eek true-still a damn shame that great work such as this gets no recognition, but as soon as Denzel played a crooked cop and Halle took her clothes off-BAM!!! Oscar eek So sad.
