A quote from Alfred Adler, your response is requested

‎"It is the individual who is not interested in his fellow men who has the greatest difficulties in life, and provides the greatest injury to others. It is from among such individuals that all human failures spring" Alfred Adler

I agree with the sentiment, but not altogether with the statement as it stands. There has been occasion where people with inordinate and/or misappropriated interest in others -- and a certain might over them -- have done great harm. Also, I take issue with the bolded section. I suspect a live and let die attitude would make for a pretty easy life, actually.

disagree.

define "interested".

"interested" can mean unfriendly and harmful. for example people who gossip about other people are definitely 'interested' in other people, and they cause a LOT of harm.

psychopathic serial killers also spend a great deal of time being 'interested' in their victims, and are, in terms of social relations, human failures.

moreover, people who devote themselves exclusively to their personal interests in life often accomplish great things that benefit humankind.

imo that statement lacks specificity and errs in its generalization

Interested in this context is along the lines of talking about something that the other person is interested in. Taking an interest in another persons vocation, or their hobby, personal life etc...because we all know people for the most part, like to talk about themselves or things that interest them.

Don't agree. Too many false assumptions and overgeneralisation.

If quoted correctly, Adler assumes only one characteristic defenise all humans in two groups;

1. those with no interest at all in others. (100% of a lifetime no interest in 100% of others)

2. those who are allways interested in others. (100% of a lifetime interested in 100% fellow humans)

Group 1 solely causes the greatest difficulty in life for both groups. group 2 does not cause difficulties (or only smaller ones?). Therefore if group 1 would not exist, there would be no great difficulties for any human being in life.

Don't think that statement would hold in an experiment, nor in real life.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

see me after class wink i'd love to know how many moles you have, and how your fingerprint swirls look under black light, and whether or not you fill your tank with unleaded gas, and if you have a pair of favorite slippers, whether you read the paper from front to back or start with your favorite sections.

it's a plan thumbs up!

"interested in" or has their best interests in mind
